A truly unique way to experience the beauty of Venice by kayaking. You will get to traverse some of the less frequented areas of Venice and travel down canals (technically, 'Rio', since only the major waterways are 'Canals') that few visitors well ever set eyes on. We took an evening excursion (5-7 pm), which was perfect: nice sunlight, and traffic on the Grand Canal not too busy. We crossed it several times without difficulty.

Our group was small (just 4 total) plus Nico, our guide, so navigating was not difficult. Nico is super friendly and passionate about preserving Venice for future generations to enjoy. After the conclusion of the kayak excursion, he gave us a lot of tips on places in Venice to visit that are off the beaten path and contemporary art museums besides the Guggenheim.

Tips:
> Clothing: Wear swim trunks and quick dry clothing - you will get wet, not from any boat waves, but because water drips from the paddles as you negotiate some narrow canals.
> Footwear: we took off our shoes and kayaked barefoot. Keens would also do fine. Your shoes and socks will get wet.
> They do have a small water-proof bag if you feel the need to bring anything (small) with you while you kayak. Better yet, bring a water-proof camera.
> Bring cash (no credit cards)

This was a unique trip which is worth the adventure. How many people can say they have canoed around Venice! The host was calm, kind and flexible. We really enjoyed this trip, the views were amazing and all people stopped to watch the canoes paddle by.

I would suggest the following to improve the experience. There should be a safety brief before you start as there are a lot of speeding boats on the water. Concerned the instructor wasn’t wearing a life jacket, what happens if he is hit by a Water Taxi? The Sun-Set Tour cost extra but we didn’t see the sunset as promised.

Might be worth changing the plastic boats for wooden Kayaks which would then blend-in with the amazing surroundings.

This may come across as a harsh review, it’s not meant to be. I was just slightly concerned with some of the safety aspects especially for novice canoes given all above.

Thank Richard H

We did the kayak tour with Nico during our Easter holiday and it was very enjoyable. We crossed the Grand Canal twice which was less scary than expected.

A very enjoyable tour of Venice by kayak. Nico our guide, was (is) from Venice and was excellent. He has a vast knowledge of the city and its long history. He is enthusiastic and has a great sense of humour. I just wish my Venetian could have been as good as his English!
It was amazing to go down very narrow canals and hardly see anyone. Nico taught us the warning you need to shout for other boats when you approach a corner!
I thought that crossing the Grand Canal might be tricky with the waves from all the passing boats, but the kayaks are very stable and easy to handle - it was no problem.

If you would really like to experience Venice from a unique vantage point away from the madness of tourists flocking the city, we highly recommend this experience. Nico, our tour guide, was a true pleasure taking us on a custom tour of the canals traversing quiet, tranquil canals and also kayaking into the Grand Canal passing by gondolas and ferries. The cherry on top was Nico providing a 101 historical tour of Venice while kayaking...where else can you kayak up next to the public casino and learn the history of it while relaxing on the water. He also gave a good education on the design of the foundations for the structures over the centuries so while you are kayaking you can notice and appreciate the different designs from eye level. This was by far the highlight of the trip and a totally unique experience compared to the pricey touristy gondola rides. The tour lasted two hours, cost us 50 euros a person, and at the time must pay by cash. You will get slightly wet from paddling so make sure to wear a bathing suit or some set of clothes that you are fine with getting a bit wet and dirty, and make sure to seal them off in a separate bag afterwards as the canal waters aren't necessarily the cleanest. Don't miss out on this! Thanks Nico!
