We visited in late March to avoid summer crowds in Venice we'd read about. Proved correct as although it's still very very busy we only had a short moving queue and were inside 3 minutes later. We've visited similarly stunning cathedrals/churches in Spain, France, Malta etc...of same wow factor. If queues are too much in summer go to other churches in Venice.

Massive queue and when you get to the front you’re then told to go all the way back to deposit your backpack (small) in a luggage place down a side street and then rejoin the queue! Once inside you’re then routed round in a circle with a side diversion into a treasure room that is charged at €2-3 or up onto the balcony for €5!! Really wouldn’t recommend this place to see.

What a stunningly beautiful Basilica. Free to go in but make sure to visit the outside gallery, with the horses, overlooking St Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace and the sea on the other side.

If you visit Venice you inevitably end up in St Mark's Square. St Mark's will always be crowded, probably wet if high tide when you will walk on duckboards, and so it was as we queued to enter the basilica.

Inside is both opulence and beauty and the mosiac floor is a wonder. No photos allowed, although many ignored the instruction and the side chapels charged to enter even though the basilica itself had free entry.

When we visited the usual way out was flooded so we had to return to the way we had come in but it was well worth the visit.

If you are willing to get up early, go to the north door of the Basilica (just past the lion statues) for 7 am Mass. You will be granted access to the beautiful and dimly lit side chapel reserved for prayers, then to an amazing tiny chapel which would hold about 30 people for the Mass itself. Be aware, you do need to know what is happening: nowhere to hide with a congregation of three elderly men, a nun and myself. However, brought up in the tradition of the Latin mass in the 60's, I could follow enough, though nearly got caught out at the collection- have a few euros handy in a pocket! This was a beautiful chapel whose white, lapis lazuli and deep red mosaics were as fresh as they must have been hundreds of years ago. A special experience, on many levels.
