Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

What an incredible piece of architecture. I would suggest having a knowledgeable guide with you to explain the architecture of the Basilica. The square is very crowded and touristy with lots of vendors and and a bunch of restaurants. Go early or very late.

Lovely place but very touristy. Beware of buying any food or souvenirs here. You will find better elsewhere. Also you are not allowed to sit down in the square. The polizia will tell you this if you sit down anywhere. The only places you can sit are if you are dining in one of the over priced cafes. Honestly they were very rude, but we didn’t allow this to ruin our day in the square.

Super crowded because we were dumb and went at ten AM. We will head back in the evening to take photos that don't have 3000 tourists in them! A must see for sure though.

We went to a couple of shops and one of them was the Serendipity, San Marco, Shop No. 14 at the Piazza. The customer service was excellent from the two shopkeepers. The shop sells handmade jewellery and some very lovely designs. The two ladies went out of their way to find the right size and style for whatever either of us wanted to try and buy. The rest of the shops were equally good too in terms of display and value.

Beautiful buildings and nice restaurants, but it was so crowded that it you could not enjoy what it had to offer
