It was great to get off of the beaten path and see Venice from this side of the city but this church....disappointing.

I did not take a pic but probably the chubbier that Jesus I have seen in a painting. Check it out on the right when you walk in. The face is also hysterical! Sounds bad, but it was funny.

Thank macsterling

In the 16th century Venice experienced a disastrous plague that killed 50,000 people including the Artist known as Titan. The Doge promise God to build a great church if the plague would end. So came into being the Church of the Redeemer or Redentore. On the third Sunday in July the Venetians celebrate Redentore. The fireworks display must be seen to be believed.

Having visited San Giorgio last year we decided to explore il Redentore, a little further along the Giudecca.

Like many Venetian churches, other than St Mark's, il Redentore is bright and airy inside and also relatively quiet and peaceful at most times.

There is an entry fee of 3 euros for which you get a helpful guide sheet and also access to the sacristy which contains some beautiful works of art (and some rather lifelike wax heads in glass jars).

I'd say this is more for architecture lovers as the interior is fairly plain (albeit spacious and light), but the exterior displays some unusual and innovative features. It's one of my '1,001 buildings you must see before you die' so a trip across the water was a no-brainer!

This 16th century church, located on Giudecca and fronting Giudecca Canal dominates the skyline. Designed by Palladio and built as a votive, for thanks from deliverance from a plague. Atop the dome is a figure of Christ the Redeemer
