I would place a visit here in the category of “hidden gem.” Some have suggested that Milan is often not the primary destination of an Italian visit; and as that’s perhaps the case, a local cemetery even less so. But here you capture, all be it as created and sustained by the families of this region’s well to do, the emotion and pathos of human loss. I have never in my life witnessed the artistic, indeed as the name suggests monumental proportion, of graves such as this. It’s as if each of the deceased is pleading, through these highly individualized statues and carvings, not to be forgotten by the living. I found this a surreal and memorable visit. May they rest in peace.
