Owner description: Why visit a cemetery when you’re on vacation, you ask? The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Reviewed 28 June 2018 via mobile

I would place a visit here in the category of “hidden gem.” Some have suggested that Milan is often not the primary destination of an Italian visit; and as that’s perhaps the case, a local cemetery even less so. But here you capture, all be it as created and sustained by the families of this region’s well to do, the emotion and pathos of human loss. I have never in my life witnessed the artistic, indeed as the name suggests monumental proportion, of graves such as this. It’s as if each of the deceased is pleading, through these highly individualized statues and carvings, not to be forgotten by the living. I found this a surreal and memorable visit. May they rest in peace.

The serene environment and beautiful architecture makes this the star attraction in Milan (next to the Duomo), glad we didn't give it a miss and visited out of curiosity!

For anybody that appreciates artistry and creation, this is a definite must. I was blown away by how many beautiful sculptures - on such a large scale - were fitted into one place, and that it can be enjoyed by anybody for free!

Cimitero Monumentale di Milano is 62 acres of joy, sadness, and beauty. Each monument and tomb taking you on a journey of that person's/family's life. To fully appreciate all this cemetery has to offer, be prepared to dedicate a few hours of your time here, but you'll be glad that you did.

We visited the cemetery the afternoon upon arrival. It was a great way to get some sunshine, walk and help adjust to the time change. It is an amazing and peaceful place. It is obvious some of the monuments were fashioned from pure grief while others seem more about preserving the family name and showing the wealth. Very historic walk. It is large so take plenty of water. There are places to rest and enjoy the tranquility.

It is really hard to call it a cemetery since it more of a museum. Each tomb is like a monument or a sculpture. Very calm and relaxing place.
