Although this restaurant is in the main square, the Piazza Sordello, it is tucked away near one end, so does not attract much passing custom. The square is pedestrianised and quiet, but it was too hot to eat outside. Inside is cool, comfortable and spacious. The food is very good but the wine list a little restricted - not uncommon in Mantua it seems. Very pleasant host.

There's no doubt that the Leon D'Oro has a fantastic position, right on Piazza Sordello with a view over the square. It definitely has its quirks though. Even by Italian standards it opens late: I was there on a Saturday night, waiting to get some dinner, and although the waiters were setting up tables from 7pm, there was no sign of life until 8pm. Even then I had to go inside and hunt someone down to find out if they were open. Service was similarly relaxed, to the point that I once again had to go inside (I sat out at one of the piazza tables) to find someone to let me pay my bill. A clear sign giving opening hours would be appreciated, as well as slightly more attentive service.

Having said that, two of the three waiters were very friendly and pleasant when they did come round. One of them recommended an absolutely excellent local wine to go with my meal, and the other was delightful. However, their colleague wasn't so successful: he brought my main course, noticed that I had no knife, and said he would bring one immediately. He disappeared and never came back. After ten minutes' waiting, I feared the meal would get cold and managed to eat it without a knife (there was no sign of anyone else to ask).

So, my rules for this osteria are: 1) Don't expect to get any food before 8pm. 2) Be prepared for a very leisurely evening 3) Be prepared to have to hunt down the waiters. That said, the location is great and the food (once it arrives) is very tasty, with plenty of options for proper Mantuan dishes to try out. Recommended, with some reservations.

We had just arrived on one of our first days in Italy, staying at the Borletto hotel, in the centre, while we were strolling through this very nice little town, trying the avoid the obvious, suddenly finding ourselves sitting at the Hosteria Leon D'Oro, where we had a very fine dinner. Absolutely recommandable.

Nice food but the athmosphere is a bit hectic. There is room for improvement concerning the attention payed to customers needs.

Everything close by: rotunda, basilica, tourist office all within a minute walk. Three restaurants in the street outside and a lovely bar " il Gallone" next door. Perfect!
Very difficult to find the car park so here are some directions: set your gps for "piazza Leon Batista Alberti". On a map find via Accadamia ( near Palazzo Ducale). Drive along here then a slight dog leg right then left continue along via Cavour, pass a car park piazza on left then turn left into via Giovanni Arrivabene. First left onto via Domenico Fernelli. Now be careful: after about 100 metres you reach Piazza Matilde di Canossa; turn left into the piazza then immediately right into via Luigi Pastro. Go to the end then turn left into via Mainolda then first right into Piazza Leon Batista Alberti. Park here.
