We ate at the Osteria Mercato during a one-day stop in Stresa, choosing it based on the TripAdvisor comments. The staff were uniformly cheerful and helpful, greeting us as if we were old friends. The food was outstanding, and the portions perfectly sized - enough to satisfy, while still leaving room for dessert. We shared an appetizer and each had a main and a dessert, with a glass of house wine. The bill came to about 80 euros, well worth the price. If you want to sit outside, a reservation would be a good idea.

Selected this place as our "last night extravagance" due to its reputation on TripAdvisor and it was perfect. Booked the same night (it was a Wednesday - book in advance for weekends), charming table in a quiet courtyard surrounded by pretty plants. One of those difficult menus (bilingual) where you fancy several dishes; crab risottos with zuchinni blossom, deep fried perch antipasti, gnocchi with bacon and local cheese. The wine list is also huge, but the lovely waitress helped me get a glass of something when my eyes crossed at all the choice. We had the lamb rack with sweet and sour onions and the pata negra (iberico) pork ribs with marrow (yes, bone) sauce and roasties. I was pretty gutted to be too full to have the cheese board - which I've heard is famously good! Trio of chocolate (mousse-y stuff with raspberry coulis) and the "passion ball" (like a deconstructed cheese cake) were just about small enough to fit in the dessert stomach and utterly delicious. Prosseco and a little fish thing on the house topped off a perfect last supper of the holiday. Bill came to €85 for 3 courses for two people plus a glass of wine.

The Dinner and Lunch we had here were the best food we had during our week in Italy.
Everything about this restaurant is excellent from the ambiance, informal dining area, friendly and knowledgeable serving staff, chefs, food and wine.
The dishes we choose were all outstanding and as well as an amazing wine list they had an excellent choice of wine by the glass. The Scallops I had for a starter were the best I have ever tasted anywhere.
We went through the menu for dinner here which was amazing but you can be more selective and they will let you share dishes making this place outstanding value. If there is a element in a dish you don't like they will if possible change it for you so just ask.
To sum up well worth seeking out this amazing restaurant and hope to return next time I am in Stresa.

A recommendation by the hotel, we went for lunch on our final day. Definitely more than just ordinary pasta. The Ravioli was spectacular. Lovely friendly service. And a cheese selection we've not seen the likes of outside top class delicatessens. You need to know the restaurant is there as passing trade is not really possible. Excellent.

We were staying in Stresa and decided to try the Osteria for dinner. We went as soon as it opened as we hadn’t made a reservation and fortunately they were able to accommodate us. I went for the plaice in tempura batter, which was nice but it’s a very subtle tasting fish and just felt that it needed something to lift the taste a bit. I had sea bass for main that was supposed to come with peppers but came with mangetout instead. Not to worry, I prefer the latter anyway. The wifey had the risotto with goats cheese and the lamb, both of which were lovely. The staff were lovely and friendly. A special mention to the music, which seemed to be a series of jazz style covers. We had fun picking out the original, managing to identify a bit of Lady Gaga, and most weirdly Creep by Radiohead and The Middle by Jimmy Eat World. Would definitely return.
