This was a real mix of a stay. We were not intending on staying in a hotel for our holiday but our villa cancelled on us very late on so we were forced into a late booking of the Royal Victoria for 2 nights. The €300 per night cost was more than we wanted to pay but we were looking forward to a bit of luxury.
Positives:
1. The staff. Very helpful and friendly.
2. The View. The view from the back of the property is stunning. Shame our room was at the front.
3. The location. Right in the central square of Varenna. Perfect.
4. The pool area. I nice pool and a lovely place to relax with a good bar.
5. The shower. The shower in our room was really good.
Negatives:
1. The bed. A terrible mattress. Really poor.
2. The aircon. It might just have been our room but the aircon was so noisy. I know aircons make noise but this was loud, rattly and inconsistent so kept waking us up. We had a fan put in our room for the second night.
3. The room. It was small and dark.
4. The wifi. For €300 per night, you expect good wifi. You should not have to pay an extra premium for a good service.

When we sat outside, it felt like a €300 a night hotel. When we were in our room, it did not.

Dear guests, we are happy you enjoyed your stay.
Our staff is always at your disposal for any need or suggestion trying to make your stay as perfect as we can.
The hotel is situated just in the middle of the village, with an amazing view of the lake you can enjoy from the outside pool in the garden or from the room (if with lake view).
We recently renovated the hotel and the room in the last years and you will find all the comforts you need, like chromo-therapeutic showers, maintaining the old-fashioned style as in the past, as the sizes of the rooms.
In case of any problem our reception staff is at your disposal for trying to fix your problem.
We offer to all our guests a free base wi-fi in all the location for searching, mails and social networks. If you need it for work you can upgrade to the premium one for payment.

We stayed for 2 nights. The rooms are a little basic and in other places this would not be rated 4 stars. However in Varenna everything is dated and places overlooking the lake with a swimming pool are rare. Therefore this is the best place to stay if you want some luxury and a pool, which you will need in summer! The lidos you can also swim in are very tiny and thus crowded. Also they have coble stones and no sun beds. The hotel garden is lovely. We were deciding between this hotel and villa cipressi. So happy we choose this, you can still visit the villa gardens (same owner) but that one does not feel like a hotel. There were no people, closed bar etc. It is more a wedding venue.

Dear guests, we are glad you enjoyed your stay.
The hotel has been recently renovated in the last few months and all the rooms are now modern with all the comforts you need, maintaining the old-fashioned style of The Villa as in the past.
The little beach in front of the hotel is a public area, so not our part of hotel and not under our control.
Hotel Royal Victoria and Hotel Villa Cipressi has the same managment but with a different guest type.
Villa Cipressi is infact famous for weddings by lake Como during the year.

My wife and I stayed for 6 days in late July / early August, on our first visit to the Lake Como region. First of all Lake Como - and Varenna in particular- is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited, and this was one of our favorite vacations.
The experience was in large part as wonderful as it was because of the hotel we stayed at - the Royal Victoria. First of all, the location is absolutely perfect, right in the middle of the quaint medieval town. Easy access to the lake as well as the restaurants off the square. You can easily walk to the beautiful San Giorgio church and Monasterio gardens. The ferry (which you’ll use often) and train station, can be reached by 10-15 minutes walk. But the hotel itself was wonderful. The staff were extremely friendly and very eager to help. The room we had -although perhaps a bit on the small side - was well worth the cost - but the view from the small balcony was absolutely priceless. Perfect view of Lake Como (although you won’t likely be in your room too often because there’s so much to do). A real benefit of the Royal Victoria is the swimming pool - I think one of the only hotels in Varenna to have one. We mixed up our days with ferry excursions, visits to other lake towns, and a shopping trip one day to Milan; and one day of relaxing at the pool. It was wonderful. Overall it’s hard to imagine a better place to stay for a Lago di Como holiday - we highly recommend it!

The pool and the back patio can't be done justice in the photos- they really are beautiful and relaxing. We got the cheapest room because the prices are pretty steep here, so our room was basic but nice. As others have commented, the wifi is slow unless you upgrade- it's fine for checking email, but anything else will be harder to do. The upgrade isn't that expensive, so if it's important to you, do it on the first device you connect with and you can use the code on all devices.

Air conditioning was loud, but effective, so didn't bother us. I think that's pretty standard in Italy. Again, we had the smallest, cheapest room, so thought it was a good value for the location and outdoor area, I suppose people who upgraded rooms and spent more would have more of a gripe about some of the other things.

One thing to note on the location- it's great for day to day wondering, but you will have a little bit of a hike with bags when you arrive by ferry and especially by train. We were fine as we travel light, but probably worth the 10 euros if you have big bags (especially from the train station).

Dear guests, we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us at Hotel Royal Victoria.
The pool is a relaxing area reserved just to the hotel guests and you can enjoy the magnificent panorama directly from the pool or the bar in the garden.
All the location and the rooms have been renovated in the last few years and they are all modern, with all the comforts you need, maintaining the old-fashioned style as in the past.
In hotel we have different categories of rooms you can reserve but they all have the comforts for making your stay unforgettable.
We offer to all our guests a basic wi-fi in all the location but, if you need to work or streaming films you can connect to the premium one by extra cost.
We are in the middle of the village, 10 minutes by walk far from train station and ferry. We offer a shuttle service in hotel during the day on request, otherwise you can catch a taxi (Euro 10,00 per way), the easiest way to come to our hotel if you have a lot of bags, as Varenna is famous for stairs.

The hotel is located in San Georgio’s Square about 5-10min walk to the ferry. My room overlooked the lake so the view was spectacular from the small balcony. The room was an ok size with a desk, open wardrobe, fridge, small safe and small TV with limited to no English speaking channels. The bed was 2 singles joined together but was relatively comfortable.
The bathroom was a quite small but had decent amenities. It was very dark though. The free Wifi was horrendously slow so I recommend you pay extra for a faster service.
Parking was €20/day at a public car park 100m away.
Breakfast was included and was pretty good but you had to pay extra for ‘cooked to order’ selections.
There was a welcome drink on arrival and some biscuits provided in the room which was a nice touch.
The room rate was very high but you’re paying for the view. Hopefully the Wi-Fi speed improves in the future!

Varenna, as a medieval city, is not famous and has no space for private parking. The managment decides to rent some spots in the public parking far 100mt from the hotel. Guests can reserve in advance a magnetic card and they can go in&out all the times they want with an extra cost of Euro 20,00 per night. Otherwise they can take the ticket in the public parking paying Euro 2,00 per hour.
We offer every morning acontinental buffet breakfast with hot/ cold dishes, homemade cakes, fresh fruit and vegetables, and more.
