Not Faulty Towers, but not 5 star…

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 Jul 2024via mobile
To me a hotel is much more than the building or grounds or even location. While those elements are important, the true distinction between adequate and great hotels is the overall hospitality, care and experience.
Everything is relative, and to be fair, we have just come from two great hotels. The Botanic Sanctuary in Antwerp and the Hotel Nobu in Ibiza.

Our opinion of Grand Hotel Miramare is that it is over stretching to award itself 5 stars. The problem is they charge as a 5 star. I would define the hotel as ‘adequate’, a comfortable 3-4 star.

The bed is a king and comfortable. The linen is basic. The ensuite has a “bath/shower” which I don’t think is better than “adequate” in anybody’s rating and definitely not 5 star for me. The amenities are average and there is no alcohol in the mini bar, or even wine glasses and bottle opener in the room. (Again, hard to see how that’s more than 3-4 star).

The breakfast was very average. Definitely more 3-4 star. It is included in our rate but we are looking for alternatives for the rest of our stay.

The restaurant is nice, but even during a heatwave not operating the air conditioning and requires gentlemen to wear long pants. I did ask if during this heat wave (it is not my definition - the radio is calling it a dangerous heatwave) if they might make exception to this policy but I was very politely advised “no” - “it is our policy”!!

The pool is the highlight of the hotel for sure. It important to appreciate that it is directly on the main road through SML so is noisy. For reasons unknown to me, there is no music, and no pool side drinks service. (I am capable to get up and order, no problem at all, but again, not aligned with the typical 5 star resort experiences we are use to).

Oddly, the gym is for 18+ only so if travelling with your 14-18yo and they expect to use the fitness centre - again, “the policy is no”! Our 15yo daughter is not with us but in all other 5 star hotel gyms that we go to the requirement is that a parent is there with them.

The beach club will is very 3 star. Dated and unremarkable. It is across the main road from the hotel.

The hotel has no security. Anybody can walk off the street annd access the lifts and hotel via stairs. Again, I find this very unusual for a 5 star resort hotel.

We did request to leave a few days early as we did not feel a good match with the hotel. Again, the policy said no, our booking through American Express was not able to be changed. Personally I think it is hard to meet everyone’s expectations and if I operated a hotel and had guests staying who were not enjoying it, I would help them find a place they feel more at home with. That to me is hospitality.

It isn’t Faulty Towers but it is far from 5 star!

Dear Matthew F,

I am sorry to read your review that you posted one day into your five-day stay with us. I assume that your motivation was to put our front office team under pressure to waive the cancellation policy since you wanted to leave a day earlier and, having been reminded of the cancellation policy that you agreed to while booking your stay on a 3rd party site, you decided to leave a list of points that are both subjective and unfair.

I would like to address each of your points separately starting from your opinion about our bed linen, all of which are from the brand Frette and are particularly appreciated by all of our discerning guests.

Your complaint started on the day of arrival, with the fact that you required a room with balcony and a walk-in shower which we would have been more than happy to help with if you had let us know ahead of time even though you had chosen a room without a balcony at the time of booking.

It is true that there are no alcoholic drinks in our minibar, however you fail to mention that the minibar is complimentary and if you had ordered any drinks through our in-room dining menu you would have received all the appropriate utensils including wine glasses and a wine opener.

Our dinner is served outdoors on a beautiful sea-view terrace, and this is where the dress-code of long trousers for gentlemen applies. As you were informed, we are more than happy to serve dinner at either the Colonne Bar terrace or at the sea front colonnade tables but of course as these are both outdoors they would not be airconditioned.
Our pool bar is open every day from 10am to 6pm and it seems to me that you chose to take advantage of our pool and pool bar and were also served regularly as evidenced by your bill.
Our gym, due to health and safety regulations is not accessible to children under the age of 18 but this was not an issue during your stay with us since you were not traveling with children.
I also don't believe you had any problems with the safety at our hotel and do not understand why you would require a security guard at the entrances since the hotel is staffed 24 hours a day.
Our beach club is an historic club, constructed in the 60s and regularly updated, is less than 10 metres away from the hotel entrance and is free of charge for guests staying with us.
I would also like to address the issue that you brought up with our front office team, both in the lobby and in emails, having checked our website and seen availability which was not offered to you and accusing them of not wanting to assist you. On that evening we did have availability due to a cancellation, however, for everybody's comfort we do not offer solutions to our guests that would require them to change room 3 times in a 5 day period which was the only option available.
Once again, I regret that you chose to leave such a disproportionate review on the first day of your stay with us which was completely devoid of any issue aside from the fact that we would not waive the cancellation policy for shortening your stay during our high season.

Best Regards,

Salvatore Longo

It’s hard to rate this hotel properly. It’s a beautiful hotel. Magnificent gardens and grounds overlooking the sea. The rooms are nice, well cleaned and many nights there were some little goodies by the staff each night. The premises are quite simply, stunning.

The food in the restaurant is lovely. Sitting having dinner or listening to the music on the terrace at night was fantastic. Special mention must be made to Lorenzo who took the time to remember our dining requests and allergies. Likewise the main lifeguard by the pool who seems to remember the guests.

The staff are polite and pleasant. However, with the exceptions mentioned above, there is something about the way in which the reception staff engage with the guests that needs some work. There needs to be a little more personality or warmth allowed to shine through.

Often there would be 8 staff members at reception. Not being overly busy. Yet no one remembers who you are when they’ve seen you every day for the past 4 days.

They don’t go out of their way to help. Late check out? No chance -but feel free to use the showers by the outdoor cabana to wash yourself before an international flight.
Of course a late check out is not a given, and the hotel allowed us to remain on the premises which is something. But at these prices, I would expect more. Grovelling around the semi outdoor showers with suitcases is not ideal. This is not what you expect from a 5 star hotel.
I think if this hotel wants to play in the big league, there is a little more work to be done to make the guests feel special.

Dear Anguna,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful review and for highlighting many aspects of your stay that you enjoyed.

We are delighted to read that you found our hotel beautiful and appreciated the well-maintained gardens, stunning premises, and lovely restaurant experience.
It’s wonderful to know that Lorenzo and our lifeguard made a positive impression with their attentive service.

Ensuring a positive guest experience is of utmost importance and, all your feedback, are extremely important to us in order to provide an overall great atmosphere and service.
Regarding your request of the late check-out I trust you understand that this is the peak of the season and we are enjoying a very high occupancy, so it might be very difficult to guarantee it.

We appreciate your constructive feedback and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the nearest future and provide an even better service.

With my best personal regards,

We loved everything about the hotel, spectacular location, right on the water with beach access and stunning views (book a room with a balcony!) Gorgeous grounds, garden and pool, walkable to the town and shops.
Hotel staff was wonderful, especially the concierge who rescued us when our hired car broke down (not booked through the hotel, lesson learned!) Rooms were on the small side but with so much to do on property and locally, it didn’t matter much.
Piano player each night on the front terrace added to the ambiance (we loved you Sergio!)
Buffet breakfast each morning was robust with lots of options (even gluten free) out on the beautiful terrace overlooking the water. The dinner we ate at the restaurant was the best we had while on vacation.
We booked a tour of nearby Portofino through the hotel (with a pesto making class and lunch included) and the guide provided (Francesca) was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

Overall, we loved our stay at the GHM!

Note: if you’re planning to visit the beach, pack water shoes the coast is very rocky!

The Grand Hotel Miramare is a lovely traditionally presented hotel.

The location is excellent with a short walk to Santa Margherita, and a longer walk to Portafino (or you can take the bus, ferry or taxi). It’s also an easy drive to Camogli (although the road is narrow).

We found the amenities excellent. The room was fairly typical in size for Italy, and we had a lovely balcony looking out to sea. Do note that the road to Portafino is between the hotel and the sea, but the double glazing is excellent. A small issue with the air conditioning was fixed immediately.

The pool area was a great size, with plenty of sun loungers, and staff on hand for pool service. We didn’t use the beach club.

We dined at the hotel each night, and enjoyed the meals and the location on the terrace very much. The staff were very attentive.

We would recommend.
