Description: Born in 1932 as a shack for slush and syrups in the Piazza Grande and then later became the local Bar Schiavoni continues to be a focal point for the people of Modena and especially for the many tourists who come to visit the city. We made a day trip to Modena and stopped by Bar Schiavoni as I had heard so much about their sandwiches beforehand. Since we already had a lunch reservation at Hosteria Giusti, we picked up 5 sandwiches to go to take back to Bologna for dinner.

We ordered 2 of the famous cotechino, 2 of the Parma ham (aka prosciutto) and fig sandwiches, and 1 of the unique specials, shrimp, pumpkin, and porcini mushrooms. I can't recall which sandwich (maybe the prosciutto and fig?), but one of them had a sesame seed studded roll that was quite dry and crumbly when we finally ate it about 7 hours later or so. The cotechino sandwich traveled much better! I'm sure others won't have this problem as most people are eating the sandwiches immediately, not hours later.

My husband really enjoyed the shrimp, pumpkin, and porcini mushroom one (I took a bite but I'm not a big fan of shrimp to begin with). I hope I got that ingredient combination right. I remember thinking it was an unusual combination, but my husband really wanted to try it.

The cafe is so small that while my husband ordered, my daughters and I waited outside. Luckily, we went before the lunchtime rush so there wasn't a long line. They have a few tables right outside, but I imagine it's not a place to linger given how few tables they have.

I'd happily return here on our next visit to Modena.

We visited at least once a day while in Modena and loved it. The owners are truly lovely, funny, and patient. The sandwiches are the perfect example of what we loved about Modena. Not flashy, just simple, delicious ingredients. They go down great with espresso or something stronger if you have the time, but are also perfect for on the go. Will miss the cotechino sandwich the most.

While this sandwich shop can be chaotic around lunchtime, the shop owners are so patient and happy to help you find the perfect panino :). We chose two sausage sandwiches- one with pumpkin and one with green sauce- both were delicious! We also enjoyed a glass of the recommended Lambrusco while we waited.

Tiny "hole in the wall" sandwich bar with wonderful sandwiches. Patience is advised if you go around lunch time, but your wait will be rewarded. Keep an eye on the "day specials" with wonderful combination of flavours and textures, described on the wall. A constant visit every time I go visiting family in Modena.

I flew from Australian to eat the famous sausage sandwiches from "Master of None". Walked in straight off the train at 3:05pm and told "were not making any more food". Their website says its open till 3:30!! Thanks for ruining my experience

If we re open till 1530 It doesn’t mean that we have enough bread every day till that time , we re sorry but you should have said something if it was really your trip’s reason instead of walking away without saying anything, we apologize and thanks for your comment
