Designed masterpiece with detain to the exterior of the building.
One of the many structures in Bologna to visit.

The church has some very beautiful and different paintings. Much prettier on the inside, then on the outside. Went there on a Sunday, and some of the churches men said my girlfriend wasn’t allowed to enter because of her clothing, even though other women inside almost didn’t wear any clothes at all.

Women have to cover their shoulders and men have to remove caps. You have to pay 2 euros to take pictures when you come in.
But this church is huge, with incredible pillars. It is very ornate with many, tasteful side altars and the meridian line is very intriguing. If you do not have a guide, make sure you situate the hole in the ceiling which shines down on sunny days to give the right date. Google it to get pictures of the round light which illuminates the floor. It is not always obvious.

I’m not a culture vulture but it’s worth a look inside as the exterior belies the size of the building and depth of works inside.

This is the Basilica on the main square of Bologna (Piazza Maggiore). from the outside, it is quite plain and unfinished, but inside, typical of any Italian cathedral, it is huge and wonderfully ornate. Lots of artwork to look at, fabulous ceilings, a 500 year old organ and what I found particularly interesting is the calendar: Redesigned by Cassini I believe in the 1600's, there's a Meridian line along the entire length of the floor of the Basilica which is struck by light from a small hole in the ceiling and indicates the date at a certain time of the day. Marvellous.
