St. Peter's Basilica in the world's smallest country deserves a visit and it is indeed amazing. The queue looks long but it takes only 20 odd minutes to enter; there is no fee. The inside has a lot of sculptures, art and paintings; all of which are quite stunning. Definitely an amazing experience!

We entered the basilica not from the front door but from the side via the Museums. This was a nice twist at the end of the tour as when we left our final view was the one we all know; that of the square with the dome in front of us.

Inside the basilica the scale of eveything is simply mind blowing. Outstanding art pieces awash with history and created by some of the world's and histories most famous artists and sculptors.
I would recommend timing your visit to allow entry to the crypts of the popes below the basilca. This has the added advantage of being able to go below the main altar and see where the location of St Peters tomb is alleged to by. An ossuary is in place but whether it contains the real bones of the saint is always debated it seems. But you can get close and if you look up you will be looking up into the altar canopy. Again, jaw droppingly amazing.

In the crypt you will see the tombs of many popes including JP 1. JP 2 is elevated to an alter in the main church given his sainthood. Again, history at your finger tips.

On leaving, look out a Swiss guard for the obligatory photo shot and then descend the step and look back. The photo on this page does not due it enough justice!

Beautiful must see in Rome/Vatican City. Traveled with teenagers and they really enjoyed the tour. Do a private tour. It is worth the money.

Our teenager described it in the best way when she said "This is Insane beauty!" And I have to agree that St. Peter's Basilica is one of the most beautiful sites on earth. For the record entrance to St. Peter's Basilica is free.

Great to see a piece of history. Lots of people around, very crowed. Pre arrange your tour prior to going. We had a private tour with only 4 of us. So it was more personalized. This was great. A must see in Rome.
