Can be enjoyed without entering. Interesting once inside. Areas in front of the colosseum crowded with vendors, tourists, pickpockets, vagrants, beggars and sketchy characters. OK if you are part of a guided tour, otherwise, long lines and wait times.

I shouldn't complain about the crowd but I'm really want to. Busy and congested. Got the audio tour and couls barely hear it over the chatter of the crowd. Amazing place, but travel off peak if possible and it may just be spectacular.

So... We opted to join a guided tour in the evening to avoid queues and crowds. It allowed us to see the area under the arena floor as well as I have English speaking tour that gave us all the details. This place is incredible.

A lot of history of Rome and the rise and fall- and how they entertained to make the common folk forget the issues. Gladiators as famous as today’s football players (soccer or gridiron )
Skip the line by buying the combo ticket at the Forum first or buy a 3 day Roma pass and not only get two sites free, others discounted, and all public transportation for the three days. About 35 Euro. We went right to security, through the turnstile and in - in just a couple of minutes. Hot this time of year to wait in long lines.

Be ready for lots of vendors - some aggressive.
