“Great location - some minor reservations about apartment”
Reviewed 31 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

This apartment is fantastic – with a few reservations. It is located in the historic centre, close to the university and many historical attractions, bars and pizzerias.

We found the locals to be friendly and helpful and had no problem with the Neapolitan pickpockets, scam artists etc, except a couple of taxi drivers who over-charged by a few euro. From the airport we were charged EUR 20 rather than the official fixed price of EUR 16 – but still a substantial saving on the EUR 60 proposed by the owner.

Since we are a family of four, using taxis was often cost-effective compared even to local transport.

Within 50m of the apartment you will find a couple of wet fishmongers, two or three coffee shops; a great bakery; four or five small, general-purpose grocery shops and many other small, dedicated stores to meet pretty much all your needs. We did not find any supermarkets, so all shopping involves interacting with the locals – of course that’s a good thing.

There is a taxi rank 5 mins walk away on via Duomo, opposite the cathedral, so it is easy to pick up a cab there for a return to the airport or any other part of the city.

Arriving at the apartment from the airport, the taxi dropped us in the little square, which the apartment overlooks, and one of the local shopkeepers directed us to the right doorway. If the owner posted a photo of the doorway to the apartment building, that would have been a help. The apartment manager, Sonia met us after a few minutes and introduced herself.
She took us up in the elevator to the apartment. We paid her the Eur 40 in cash, “for cleaning”. Then she gave us a tour of the apartment.

The apartment block is full of character with 122 (I counted them) worn stone steps leading to the upper floors; washing-lines strung across the open space and pot plants on every landing. There is a large iron gate across the main entrance from the street to the apartments, so good for security.

The apartment itself is clean, modern and light. The WiFi signal is strong and we experienced no problems with internet while we were there.

The double-height kitchen/diner is of a good size and well-accommodated with stove, hob, extractor fan and double sink. Appliances include microwave, kettle, washing machine and multiple stove-top coffee percolators, but no aircon unit. The chopping knives are a bit old and cheap, but that’s pretty much what you expect in a rented apartment. There are many power points throughout the apartment, most of which are the in-line three-narrow-pin variety common in Italy, but different from the style typical in Germany or France. A number of adapters in the apartment convert these to the German-style two fat pin sockets.

Elsewhere in the apartment is a powerful hair dryer, a small TV; a small boombox audio player; loads of space for drying clothes and a range of maps, guides, books and other helpful material.

One bedroom is divided off from the kitchen/diner by large sliding doors which shut out light and noise, but there are no windows and no aircon unit.

The second bedroom is directly above this, and is also divided off from the kitchen-diner by a pair of large sliding doors. Again no windows, but a good aircon unit keeps the room cool.

One small drawback was that the third bedroom is open to the main living room, so you cannot really use the main room while someone is sleeping in the upper room. This room also has no windows but it does have an aircon unit.

There are two bathrooms. In each of them the shower head really needs to be replaced (May 2015). They leak and spray water in all kinds of directions. We saw a review which indicated that these needed replacing back in 2011. There are warnings about not putting toilet paper down the toilet in case of blockages, but Sonia told us to ignore these (so why post them in the first place?)

Also, the electrics seem a bit dodgy. When we arrived, Sonia went round demonstrating light switches, and discovered that a few of the bulbs had blown. She swapped over some working bulbs for the failed ones, but never replaced the broken ones. As a result we had no bedside lights for the week. During the week one of the lights in the hallway continually flickered, even though it was switched off, so I removed that bulb as well. One of the many power sockets in the kitchen/diner did not work

These minor quibbles aside, we had a fantastic time in the apartment. There is a great buzz about the local streets – all human life is here. It is an easy walk to the main station, or to the Porto Nolana station at the end of the circumvesuviana line (though the area close to P.Nolana and on the way from the apartment appears to be a bit questionable) or to the bars and restaurants of the University district. Most places do both eat-in and take-aways, so you can easily feed a family of 4 large appetites with pizze, salad and wine and still get change from EUR30 and then go to a pasticceria for coffee and dessert. Or you can go to a more fancy fish restaurant by the sea and watch dusk gradually overtake Mt Vesuvius for five times that amount. Naples has it all, and of course this apartment is a fantastic base from which to explore.

“In the centre of the loud amazing chaos of Naples a haven of tranquility”
Reviewed 25 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We absolutely loved Naples. One of the guide books said the closest to Mumbai or Cairo you can get in Europe and this is probably a good clue. Wonderful food, wonderful wine and wonderful people. Not to mention the underground catacombs and Roman remains, art galleries and Archeology museum. If you want to experience Naples you must stay in the historic centre, this is where it's really at. The apartment was a haven of tranquility but we could open the windows and let Naples in. Lovely spacious apartment with all you need including Wifi and washing machine. We didn't use the cooker though too much temptation on the streets and Trattorias. Sonia was really helpful and arranged our transfers from the Airport.

“A bright, clean, spacious apartment in the heart of Old Town Naples”

Although the location looks a bit drab on arrival the apartment was very good place to stay. Good lighting, clean, spacious and well equipped. Many had told us we were mad for staying in the centre of Naples (pickpockets etc) but a bit of commonsense ensured we had no problems at all...walked everywhere we wanted to go in the city and train to Herculaneum was straight forward.
We made a few suggestions directly to Sonia about minor issues that would make the apartment even better. She has responded and undertaken to implement all our suggestions.
All in all very happy

“bright, roomy, quiet appartment in the center of Naples”

We were very satisfied with the apartment which was exactly as shown in the internet pictures - bright , roomy and very quiet - an oasis of peace in the midst of the very lively historical centre of Naples.

The apartment was well-appointed and very clean. It is secure as the main gate is closed evenings and at weekends. It is convenient to bars, restaurants and all shopping can be done locally on foot.

The apartment is ideally situated and can be recommended as a basis for Naples and day trips to nearby Pompei,Amalfi Coast , Sorento and Capri.

The manager, Sonja, proved extremely helpful, informative and effective.

“spacious apartment, very central location”

The apartment is located in the center of the old town. It's an old residential building with a big courtyard. On the outside it looks like most buildings in the old town: a bit dark and rundown. When you enter the apartment, its bright and spacious and well kept. There are nice views from the windows to the street, a little square and you can even see the sea. We really enjoyed our stay in Naples. I think the apartment was one of the reasons. It's at walking distance from the central station, the harbour and in the middle of the old town in a lively street where you can find a lot of bars and restaurants.
