Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, Mount Vesuvius is famous for the calamitous eruption in 79AD, which buried the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

In total, the journey took about three hours. From the Pompeii ruins sites, I took a 10 euro round trip bus to get most of the way up the mountain. They stopped at a little ticket booth where you have to buy a 10 euro ticket to enter the pathway to the top. Once you reach the park entrance at the top, I had about an hour to walk up to the crater and walk halfway around it. If you want to walk up to the absolute peak, you most likely have to pay for a private tour where you can hike up there but you can still get amazing views of the surrounding land and sea if its a clear day.

Great experience. Must visit if you are in Naples. Be prepared and have some walking shoes. Better to have it together with Pompeii tour.

We did a full day tour from Naples where half was Vesuvius . We drove to the start of the hiking trail by bus and then were allowed 105 mins to go up
And down . You have to be pretty fit the distance was bout 2 kilometres on a very steep sandy rocky path up basically . You use muscles in your calves and legs you didn’t know you had . A lot of people hire skiing poles which on reflection was probably a good idea . You can buy water or drinks . It’s worth it when you get to the top
And see the crater . It’s amazing great views of Naples too. It’s a lot easier on the way down !!! We had a great lunch at a winery in the shadow of vesuvius afterwards then went to Pompeii . A great day

If you watch the movie Pompeii which shows Vesuvio exploding and covering Pompeii and then climb Vesuvio it will feel very eerie. The trip is very smooth. we went by car, parked for 5 euro, took a bus 2euro pp to the start of the climb and then climbed for about 1/2 hour to the crater rim. It's just a giant dormant hole now but when you think of the destruction caused in the past and even the last eruption in 1944 you can only be impressed. Views to Naples is also impressive.

Easy to get to Vesuvio with the public transport. We took Circumvesuviana train from Napoli to Sorrento. At Pompei Scavi you get off and just across the street is the bus station for bus that will take to Vesuvio. Fantastic view from the top of the mountain. The climb is not so hard and it is a must do if you are the zone.
