Owner description: The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

You see very little during the guided "tour" and what you hear you might as well read online. The opera hall is very beautiful for sure but you're better of saving your money for the opera tickets instead.

Spectacular theatre - very impressed with the restoration and magnificence.

We went to a late concert on a Saturday evening and totally enjoyed the whole experience- great atmosphere, beautiful theatre. Mainly people from Naples attending and all very dressed up and glamorous!

Well worth a visit. Can highly recommend!

I saw La Traviata here last week. The person in the box office spoke very good English and was very helpful. Ticket prices were below US levels, including box seats, a great US rarity.

The spectacular building has been beautifully restored including air conditioning, comfortable seating and a staff of young women ushers, all of whom spoke good English. Opera subtitles were in both Italian and English. Rather than condensed subtitles, all lyrics are shown in both languages. Some in the audience wore great clothes, but almost no ties. The tourists wore whatever they had packed for the trip but ,of course, all the men wore long pants!

The area is very safe, which is now true of central Naples in general. All in all, it is a quintessential European experience.

A must visit in Naples this opera house the first ever built is spectacular. Area around the Opera house shops, buildings is also worth sometime. I found the main streets in Naples quite safe.
