The drive here was dicey with all the narrow roads. The hotel offers to take the car and park it outside of the historic district for you for an additional fee. My husband tried to find the parking garage gave up and had the hotel park it. Just do that from the beginning. Its worth it. We loved our cave room and our teenagers swam in the spa pool. There is an additional fee for that but it is understandable given how hard and costly it probably was to install a pool in these types of buildings. We loved the location. I wouldn't stay anywhere else but in the historic sassi region if you are visiting Matera unless you are disabled. They do have an elevator in the hotel but there are still steps to be climbed and quite honestly the whole area is physically challenging to get around but one of the coolest places I have ever visited and I have traveled quite a bit. The hotel staff was great. Arranged a cooking class for us with a local chef. The breakfast provided was quite good. Overall this town and this hotel were the highlight of our 2 week trip to Southern Italy.

We stayed for one night at this fantastic hotel to experience Matera. Driving in can feel slightly daunting given the winding streets, however upon arrival the reception staff offered us to pay €20 to valet the car to a nearby car park which we gratefully accepted! The hotel is in a perfect location to explore the streets of Sassi and the rooms are spacious and cool. The biggest attraction is the spa which is an extra cost of €20 per person and an absolute must - swimming in the caves felt very special. I would absolutely recommend for anyone wanting a relaxing stay in Sassi!

We spent two nights at Locanda di San Martino. It was a great experience. English was easy. Our room had an excellent view of the ancient city. It was NOT a cave room so if you desire that experience, be sure to request in advance. The cave rooms didn't seem to have the view we had so that is a personal choice. The breakfast was buffet and had everything we needed. I would definitely stay here if we make are way back to Matera. We didn't use the thermal bathes so no thoughts therein. PARKING: The hotel has a deal with a lot up the stairs in the modern city. They will walk down and retrieve the car when you arrive and deliver it back when you depart. Charges were reasonable and added to the bill but seems like that is the best (only?) choice if arriving by car. This is another Italian town that is not car friendly and more fun without that burden.

Yes, it was an experience having a cave for a hotel room, that was dug out centuries ago.
We had a rental car and my tomtom satnav guided us accurately to the front of the hotel. Parking the car to "check in", is a challenge! Very few spots to park short term and impatient drivers dont help the cause! Once parked, the hotel was very helpful relocating car to a garage. The smaller the car, the better. Breakfast - one of the better breakfasts we have encountered in Italy. Room was clean and comfortable! As in the title, the cave pool was the highlight.
