This is one of the traditional places worth a visit in Valencia. Located by the Plaza de la Reina, a walk away from the Cathedral.
The interior design is very characteristic and it offers the typical local pastries: fartons with horchata, a milky cold drink made from the tubers of the nutsedge plant. Very refreshing!
A 'must-see' whilst in Valencia, the Horchateria Santa Catalina is certainly worth a visit.
Just a few steps away from the cathedral and Plaza Virgen, the place is rightly famous for its blue and white tiling as much as its horchata and fartons (sweet light brioche type buns). While I couldn't face the unusual-tasting horchata (unpleasant experience over 20 years ago), I would recommend the hot chocolate, with a 'farton' of course!
And admire the tiling too.
Get your horchata with fartons, and your churros with chocolate here. The best. Very classic space close to the Plaza of The Virgen.
The place was packed when I visited, but luckily people move fast. I observed that there will always be one to three tables vacant every time someone walks in, even a large group. There are tables upstairs, also.
Service was fast. Waitresses are quick to spot if you are seated at the table and will immediately come to you. The waitress I got spoke English, so that was good. They don't have a menu, so you should have done your research prior, or point at the different pastries and confectionaries on display downstairs.
After the waitress takes your order, you wait just a few minutes (I observed that it usually takes 2 minutes) and then your waitress arrives with your order. You don't pay at the cashier, though. You hand the payment directly to the waitress after she serves you your food and drinks.
Horchata was sweet, almost like Horlicks. Glass it came in looked small and skinny, but held more than enough for one person. A farton and glass of horchata is 3.75€
