Owner description: World famous modern art museum featuring a diverse collection of 20th century Spanish art, from Picasso to Solana.

This is an old palace with a central garden courtyard with cool high ceiling rooms showing modern and theme art displays. You will also find Picasso's famous Guernica here on the 2nd floor (room 206). This is for Modern Art enthusiasts more than Classic Art, however, there is a lot to see here (4 floors) so be prepared not to have time/energy to take it all in during a single visit.

I enjoyed visiting the Reina Sofia museum. Mind you, I don't love modern art, but I wanted to see Guernica and a couple of other works in the museum. I enjoyed a perfectly lovely morning milling about, enjoying some of the temporary exhibitions, especially Dora Garcia's Second Time Around, which was so much fun to experience. There were lots of young school groups when I was there, which got somewhat annoying as I had to dodge groups of chattering pre-teens, but overall it's great to see schools taking their students to museums.

Of course, Guernica is the highlight of the museum. I especially enjoyed looking at the array of photographs that show Picasso's artistic process as he worked on the painting.

Good experience!

The Reina Sofia Museum is a must see of your life: the building is very interesting (old hospital of the 18th century), but the collections ... The Guernica is something unique and moving, an experience. But the collections of Picasso, Dalí and Miró are exceptional. And to see 20th Century Spanish Art it is also absolutely necessary to visit it calmly. Not so much the art of the international 20th Century; the exhibitions are usually unattractive for the general public because they are excessively academic, but if you have time do not miss them.
Today I was in the museum and I wanted to give you several tips.
The Reina Sofia has two entrances: one for the Plaza that is in Atocha, and another one in the building with the new wing by Jean Nouvel.
Generally, people use the main entrance of Atocha. I would advise you to use Jean Nouvel's: there are fewer people and there is a ticket office to buy the tickets. It is a covered area (for rain and sun) and a fantastic waiting area to meet people. There is a terrace of the restaurant-café Nubel, fantastic, and that cafeteria is worth seeing also for architectural reasons. The view of the Liechtenstein sculpture is worth it. And the area also has free wifi. The bookstore is a very good one and is also located in that access to the Museum. And, once inside, the way to go up to the floors, the views of the city of Madrid, the access to the halls and exhibitions, and to the services (lockers and toilets) is easier.

For a very reasonable €10 each you will get to see some stunning pieces of art.
There is a huge collection of Picasso which is very impressive and a really good selection of Dali my personal favourite.
Photos are allowed in the majority of the rooms and the lay out is very easy to follow.
We were very impressed with the range and collection of modern art
If you have a big bag there is a locker system which costs €1 which you get back on your return.
Only negative is the coffee shop/ restaurant which seemed very expensive especially if you are a large family. We decided to go elsewhere but this didn’t spoil our visit as we were ready to leave anyway.
The views from the glass lift are pretty too
