TripAdvisor forum said no need to buy tickets before you go but trust me, buy ahead and go early.

Looks like a great place and if we had time, we would have purchased tickets and gone back.

Instead, we got in line, waited an hour, and then the line stopped moving. We then went to check and were told they had sold out for the day (at 11:30 am) and they were only letting people in as people came out.

Go, just buy tickets ahead of time.

The palace itself is beautiful, but the fact that you pay 10 euros and they don't even allow you to take pictures inside (with or without flash) is absolutely ridiculous. I'd love to take photos and make memories. It's so simple, but they hire rude people to shout "No photos!" at you. This thing overshadowed my whole experience. If I knew this before, I wouldn't even go in. They should really change this stupid policy. Would have been 5 star, but it's 1 for now, I'm that upset.

The Royal Palace in Madrid is a must if you’re visiting the city and want to learn something interesting about old spanish traditions and way of life for royalty.
It’s probably my favorite place to visit in the city of Madrid. It has a lot of content but the visit is not execivly long. Amazing works of art all throughout and not too expensive either.

We were in Madrid 2 weeks ago and decided to visit the palace. We researched it on line and knew there was a lot to see so we opted for the audio tour (3 euros) This was a great investment. At each stop that was clearly numbered , a brief history and explanation of what you were seeing was available. We went mid week so there werent as many large tour groups which helped. We moved at our own pace and were fascinated by the different decorations and majesty of each room. Photos were not allowed in most of the rooms, but we got plently of them in the plaza out front as well as the main staircase. I would highly recommend booking on line first to save the wait for tickets . There was no line for those who booked on line. Great historical overview of Madrid's history and a must see for any visitor!

We went there on Sunday afternoon when it was very busy. However due to the sheer size of the Palace we hardly noticed all the people.
The Palace is truly awesome, that I can’t do justice with words. The scale, variety, sense of history, colours, pieces of furniture, jewellery etc leaves you spellbound as you walk from one room to the next. A huge sense of history. Don’t miss it.

Remember as for all major attractions in Madrid buy your tickets in advance. This allows you to skip the long queues and instead join the security queue.
