Owner description: Marques de Murrieta is an older than 160 years-old winery where the deep respect for the history and the tradition finds a perfect balance with the focus on the future. Its origin dates from 1852 when Luciano Murrieta y Garcia -Lemoine produces the first fine wine from Rioja and is the first one to export it. He acquires the Ygay Estate and builds his emblematic Ygay Castle. In 1983 Vicente Cebrian Sagarriga, tenth Count of Creixell, takes over the project and after his death in 1996, his children, who are currently responsible of such an ambitious and endearing family business that they strengthen day after day with its presence in the different continents. The uniqueness and quality of the Marques de Murrieta wines is determined, to a great extent, by the singular caracter of the Ygay Estate, 300 hectares of own vineyards located around the winery, which allow the absolute control of the raw material. Located in the south of Rioja Alta, it enjoys a privileged continental climate tempered in the north by the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains. The grape varieties cultivated are five reds (tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano and cabernet sauvignon) and the white viura.

Private visits to the winery including lunch. The winery is beautiful and very well maintain. The wines are some of the best Rioja has to offer. We included a gourmet lunch paired with the wines that was excellent. Overall one of the best winery experiences ever.

I knew this was going to be something special when the tour guide Natalie introduced us to Murrieta standing outside in front of beautiful green lawn surrounded by lavender with 4 workmen attending the gardening. The tour of vineyards and winery was informative and well paced. There is history and wine making philosophy and a magnificent cellar. I opted for the haute cuisine option with a tasting of 3 wines. The food was some of the best I have had in Spain and prepared so as to match the wine. A very pleasant way to spend 3.5 hours.

Beautiful location eventhough there was construction going on that we never saw so it did not impact the visit.
The visit was will organized and Natalia (our guide) was excellent in her knowledge and easy of guiding the visit and tasting which was paired with a delicious meal... yes, not the other way around.
