Beautifully presented, the information ranged from prehistoric to the twentieth century. The only area that I felt was a bit neglected was the period of the Moors, otherwise I enjoyed the story of the area unfolding.

Just in case the name of this museum puts people off, perhaps I should clarify that it is not about wine! It charts the history of the Rioja region from stone age until the 19th Century and is situated in a rather nice old palace.

The exhibits include some top quality items and paintings and the whole place is very well set out. Most importantly, the information boards include English translations, and the audio visual displays, which are very good, have English subtitles.

Certainly well worth a visit.

And a reminder - you need your passport to gain free entry and you also need a 1Euro coin for the locker to put any bags away.

We spent two hours visiting here. The museum impressed us very much. It is well laid out starting with prehistory on the first floor and moving up to almost modern times. There are excellent notice boards giving information written in Spanish and English as well as smaller individual descriptions of items. We felt it gave us a really good understanding of the history of the Rioja area through the ages. The videos were very good too.

This museum was free, and was a good way to while away some time before the tapas bars reopened for the evening.
Note that whilst free, you had to provide some ID to enter (fortunately I had my driving licence on me). I don't think this was an age requirement, more of a government funding thing.
Either way it was quite interesting, although we didnt stay more than about 20-30 minutes.
