4 night break at this yacht hotel. 15 minute walk from airport, easy to find, and you get to walk across the runway, at least until new tunnel access opens soon.
We had a superior room on 6th floor. Room pretty big, bed comfortable, free safe, tv with uk channels, decent size wardrobe, good bathroom. Just FYI Wardrobe forms wall between room and bathroom. When doors open both sides there is a view straight through. Fine when sharing with partner not so good if sharing with friend, parent, child. Toilet and shower glass all sides, no door on access to bathroom, so little privacy.
Central iPad type control unit for curtains, lights etc.
Rooms on runway side are permanently in shade but quieter, despite close proximity of airport. Only 4-6 flights per day and not early or late so no issues. With doors shut we didn’t hear anything. On the other side it’s sunny but right opposite at the back of boat is an office block and at the front a bar with large outdoor tv screen.
Usual large breakfast selection for hotels, aqua bar nice in the sunshine, quite pricey but it’s a 5 star.
La Sala restaurant is nice, steak excellent, salmon teriyaki not great, just a huge bowl of noodles. We shared starters which was plenty. Some of the wines on a short wine list not available, which is disappointing for a 5 star place.
Overall a really nice place to stay. We would stay here again but not sure about returning to Gibraltar.
A few tips
Book a yellow boat dolphin trip and get the cable car for £5. That’s a £10 saving and gets you a prepaid entry. Ticket sellers on quay outside boat. Plus 10% discount on quayside bars and restaurants with the ticket.
Cable car, if you get the ticket above, ignore the queues and go to the front. There is a prepay entry, can save yourself a couple of hours.
If you hire a car, do it in Spain it will save you time crossing border.
If you hire car for multiple days there is a car park on the Spanish side right by the border, Santa Barbara, 15.60 euro overnight.
Little bay Indian tapas restaurant on the quay outside is really good. Grille 53 is rubbish.

My husband booked this trip as a treat for my birthday..... We have had an absolutely wonderful time.

Staff are polite and helpful at all times. Spotlessly clean and the ultimate in luxury. We felt like royalty!!

Gary, the manager, is wonderfully helpful, we cannot wait to return.

We stayed at the Sunborn between August and September. We occupied several rooms which, in the main, were excellent in facilities and location. The staff were excellent and the décor of the hotel bright, pleasant and unique.
I would give the hotel an unreserved 5* rating except for one thing.
On the first night our allocated room was on the side above the reception desk and entrance. When we arrived the room was well appointed but stuffy and hot. The porter adjusted the air conditioning but, after several hours the room became even hotter. Overnight the room temperature rose to 30C. We could not have a window open as the noise from the adjacent casino and Ocean Village was too loud for sleep.
Another point we didn't like was the lack of privacy as the bedroom had a see-through glass door into the bathroom and no way of showering or using the toilet without being on view to other occupants of the bedroom.
By the morning we were dehydrated due to the heat and lack of refreshing sleep. We were left with severe headaches.
At the first opportunity we complained and were told that management were aware of the heating/air con problems and that several bedrooms on that side of the yacht were affected.
Later on our second day we were moved to another room on the marina side of the hotel. This was a marked improvement and, if we'd been assigned this room from the beginning, we'd have no complaints.
Now on the positive side – the staff are efficient, eager to please and very polite. We found that the prices for food and drinks to be in line with what you'd expect in similar establishments. In fact, in general, drinks prices were lower that 4* or 5* hotel prices in the UK.
The quality of food was excellent. I'd recommend the afternoon high tea. Evening meals in the La Sala Bar & Restaurant could not be faulted for taste, service and presentation. On some nights they provide live entertainment and tribute acts.
The hotel is well located near the airport, the centres of entertainment and the main sites in Gibraltar.
If we visit Gibraltar in the future we would consider using Sunborn but we would insist on a bedroom/cabin on the marina (starboard) side. We visited several of the rooms on that side and each had a slightly different layout. There was better privacy when using the bathroom in the rooms on that side.

Room Tip: Rooms on the Marina side of the hotel

Dear Plod715

Many thanks for your extremely kind and comprehensive review.

I'm so sorry you had a minor issue with your room regarding the A/C I believe we spoke whilst you were here with us and once you moved from your old room our Maintenance team went straight to work and found the problem where this was correct.

Sunborn is situated within a amazing location and is part of the heart of Ocean village

It is very gratifying for me to see that so many of our staff fulfilled your expectations and served you kindly and attentively as you rightly deserve.

Once again, thank you for your valued feedback and we hope to serve you again whenever your travels bring you back to Gibraltar.

Kindest Regards

Gary Barrett

Just went to Gibraltar for first time for one night, stayed at Sunborn not sure if it’s refurbished cruise liner or that is how the hotel is built it looks awesome by day and night.
Great service, food and accommodation.
Will be back again for two or three nights.
I stayed in superior room facing sea and runway. Next time will try a suite:-)
Highly recommend Sunborn

We stayed here just recently for MIL’s birthday, the room was lovely , no faults, spacious (superior room) nothing was asked for as it was already there. Shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, scales, umbrella, slippers, dressing gowns, soap, nail file, laundry bag.....and more.
Fridge with drinks (extra cost) tv, control panel for lights and curtains. We had a balcony view over looking the Marina and runway (3 planes a day) was peaceful and no noise when in bed.

We ate breakfast in the dining area , everything you could think of from English cooked breakfast to fresh fruit, smoothies and pastries.

We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was reasonable .

Service was good, staff worked hard and were polite and couldn’t do enough for you.

Not much to do on the island apart from see the monkeys which you can do by bus (£30) which gets you a pass into the caves, or cable cart.
Town is a stones throw away and easily accessible by walking.
Lots of history, we would definitely return for another short break.
