An in-depth and tangible examination of a mostly buried chapter in history, as exciting as it is brutal, which makes it unlike any other touristic endeavour in the city. Well worth the time and investment for anyone. For those who take an interest in politics: it is not possible to understand much of contemporary politics in Barcelona and Spain without being in possession of the information which has been ably concentrated into this extensively researched tour.
I went on Catherine’s tour and took my two children. The tour was a fantastic way to get a feel for the iconic nature of Barcelona, particularly in the way that it became the centre of the world for a brief moment in 1936. I found Catherine’s style of presentation fascinating and engaging. She also knows the best place to eat tapas, and the small eating place we were taken to was a real highlight. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in the Spanish Civil War history of Barcelona, and the stories behind the iconic parts of the Gothic Quarter.
I can only recommend it! Catherine added a lot to what I already knew about the Spanish civil war...
I hesitated to book this tour because of the length but 5 hours flew by, even in the pouring rain. Catherine is a very talented historian and guide, and I learned as much as I might in a semester long college course, while walking through the history first hand. I absolutely loved it and recommend it to everyone: history buff or not (I am not).
Our guide (Catherine) was very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. This tour would be very interesting for complete novices too.
I would suggest less discussion on Orwell's experiences during the civil war, and a greater focus on other topics.
We spent the day with Nic understanding the details of the Spanish Civil War. This is not a typical visitors tour but a very in depth discussion of many concepts surrounding the Civil War. Nic did a good job of going over a ton of information and details. We were a larger group (about 12) than usual so there were times that it was difficult to hear him. There were a lot of historical memorabilia which added to tour as well . One suggestion would be to add a small write up or sticker to the back of all the photos that were passed around as it became confusing what photo was of whom once they started circulating among the group. His personal stories of tragedy and the people involved made for a very engaging afternoon. i would recommend this tour to those interested in history.
