We were stopping in an hotel away from Palma and weren’t sure whether to visit the capital having driven from the airport, (nothing nice on the journey from there while in the city), but my wife had read and dreamed of seeing the cathedral - it far exceeded her expectations and mine! The whole area where it is set is beautiful, the work done to integrate with the port, the boulevard across the front, the old town right beside it. Once inside the cathedral it is amazing, tall slender columns, numerous, bright, colourful stained glass windows and two really amazing ones at each end. When we went, mid week afternoon in June, it was not so very crowded either so really nice to appreciate everything quietly and peacefully.
Make sure you do approach it from coast road and see the magnificent vista, it is a gem - probably looks great illuminated in late evening too but that is for someone else to describe! We used an underground car park just opposite the cathedral so a very easy 5 minute walk to get there, all of which allowed us to soak up the really picturesque setting.
