There are not sufficient superlatives to describe the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. I had seen photos, but they cannot begin to describe the experience of viewing this structure. First of all, it’s massive. It looks like a whimsical representation of a monster flagship with equally oversized surreal embellishments. It’s like something out of a Sci-fi movie set. The exterior cladding is all metal, curved and curled to possibly signify the furls of sails. The oversized embellishments include a 30-40’high dog covered in flowers, a wrought iron spider large enough to hold 50 people in its grasp that spews forth steam at intervals, bobbles piled high in the middle of a fountain, and giant sized metal tulips displayed on a concrete slab. That’s just the outside décor. But, alas, that’s the best bit. While there are one or two impressive displays of modern art inside, most of the museum’s acquisitions are largely underwhelming. Still, just seeing the architecture is worth a trip.
