Owner description: This giant Gothic cathedral, which until its completion in 1880 had been under construction for over 500 years, is perhaps Germany's most famous religious structure and includes two huge towers that serve as the defining symbol of Cologne's skyline.

We visited this magnificent church in December of 2017 and it was decorated for Christmas. They choir was practicing and it was absolutely magical. There was also a Christmas market in front of the church with the most delicious cookies. If you ever get to this beautiful city, make sure you visit, you will not be disappointed.

This is worth a look it's free to enter the main cathedral, very grand. Definitely recommend paying around €4 to walk to the top of the tower. (no elevators so prepare for a long walk lol) but the views are amazing from the top. Don't recommend if you don't like heights as the stairs and viewing area are very narrow. There is a lot of graffiti up the staircase which is a shame for such a beautiful building

This is truly one of the most spectacular cathedrals I have had the pleasure of seeing. The architecture is really something and the experience is enough to overcome some of the things we didn’t like, hence the 5 rating shall remain (although my dislike of heights contributed to that more than anything that could be changed by the cathedral management!).

The thing that did annoy me was charging for the toilets. Due to said dislike of heights, I suddenly got the need to go but had no change and they specifically have a sign on buying a ticket to go up to the top that they won’t give change for the toilet. I understand keeping people from just wandering into the toilet but having paid, it would be nice if they could have a free system for ticket holders. Anyway minor issue and luckily in the end the woman in the ticket booth happened to give us the specific coin needed.

I didn’t manage to go all the way up to the top but did manage all except the last section so I was able to have a rest whilst I waited for the rest of the party to return. Be warned, it is a tiring climb even for us in our 20s. Due to the way it is built, there are sometimes not opportunities to have a rest when you might need it, which is something to bear in mind. It is a narrow winding staircase with people crossing each other going up and down so if you aren’t able to see steps well, it may be tricky. There did seem to be some kind of system to follow when you got up to the bells but few people seemed to be using it and just doing their own thing.

So it was slightly chaotic at times but...The views on the way up from the small windows are stunning so even if you can’t make it all the way to the top, it’s worth a go even just to get to the bells.

This enormous Gothic Church seemed to spread across a whole block in the beautiful city of Koln. How could this vast cathedral not be bombed? The historical photographs near the entry show WWII bombing results. Yes, bombs could tear some of its wonder asunder, but much of it resisted. It has been restored, maintaining the strong fortress it has been for generations. Be sure to hire a great guide and you’ll discover many detailed facts about the cathedral’s original 15th century stained glass windows, some of which were removed and stored in safe places in 1937 by Germans who believed that war and destruction was inevitable in the upcoming years.
