Imposing on the horizon for miles is this impressive twin elevator structure lifting or lowering large ships 38 meters in just a few minutes ! Several ships were raised and lowered in water filled basins by the elevators during our time there. Totally different engineering design but comparably impressive to the Panama Canal Locks. When built in 1974 this was the largest ship elevator in the world. There is an excellent exhibition hall & museum with several interactive displays - even though it is all in German we still found it very valuable.

When we arrived, they were just about to lift up a large ship...
Absolutely crazy engineering...
Best way to describe it, is two large bathtubs that lift up to ships and boats.

Must see, if you're a engineering buff...

We visited this twin ship lift in Saturday and were immediately struck by the immense size of this construction. What engineering! What design! A stupendous undertaking. We first visited the extremely interesting museum/interactive display of ship lifts. We were amazed and the variety of devices employed in the lifting, lowering and indeed turning round/spinning of barges and ships. We had not though this kind of thing possible.
We then went to the viewing platform to see the machinery in operation. The speed with which the barge was lifted 38 metres up into the air in its water filled canal pod so it could join the higher canal. It took just 3 minutes!!!!
