Imposing on the horizon for miles is this impressive twin elevator structure lifting or lowering large ships 38 meters in just a few minutes ! Several ships were raised and lowered in water filled basins by the elevators during our time there. Totally different engineering design but comparably impressive to the Panama Canal Locks. When built in 1974 this was the largest ship elevator in the world. There is an excellent exhibition hall & museum with several interactive displays - even though it is all in German we still found it very valuable.
