This monument was began in 1871 and was completed in 1883 ,the height of it is 38 meters and on top it has huge statue of Germania, symbolizing " the guard of the rhine". It was a tribute to the German empire immediately after the Franco-Prussian war. This is well worth the hike up to see it,or take theeasy was with cable car.

Certainly an imposing and impressive monument. It had to be quite a process to create and construct. Great views of the Rhine and a nice park area. Worth a visit.

We really loved our trip to the top of the hill to see the monument. You have a choice to go by cable car, or to take a hike through the vineyards. Since we chose to ride the cable car, we had great views of the river, the countryside and the vineyards. A great place to take photos.

Visible for miles around, the full scale and detail can only be appreciated up close. It commemorates the unification of Germany under Wilhelm I. Either take a leiurely stroll up the hillside through the vineyards rising behind Rudesheim or pay to go up by the Seilbahn (well worth the price). There is a small cafe and toilets at the top and plenty of room to roam or have a picnic between the majesty of the monument and the Rhein stretching out below you. The monument itself is huge (similar scale to Wilhelm I on Deutsches Eck in Koblenz) and detailed with lots of history attached. Definitely worth getting up close when you're anywhere near Rudesheim.
