Given Berlin's fascinating, troubling, and textured history, we were urged by friends to hire a guide for a morning to better understand and truly see Berlin through a more informed lens. In response to a quickly answered email in which were asked about interests and availability, we indicated that rather than one of the singly-focussed walks offered, we'd like to take a more multi-perspective approach to appreciate the influences of politics, culture, Jewish life, gay life, art and architecture on one another. The response to this customized approach was, "great...and the perfect guide, Ronen Altman Kaydar." And we agree. Ronen is a smart, thoughtful, and articulate historian and gifted storyteller. In what seemed like a very short four hour period, we moved throughout Berlin (efficiently and effectively using--and enjoying--every form of Berlin's public transit system)hearing and learning Berlin's 20th century story through the confluence of themes Ronen artfully wove together as we ambled our way through side streets, inner courtyards, boulevards, old neighborhoods and new. Truly a highlight of our visit to Berlin. Ask for Ronen--he's informed, engaged and generous...he even helped us to plan out our must-see/must-do list for the balance of our stay.
