It is a shame that this structure is so reminiscent of the ugly Russian and East German
architecture of the East Zone when Berlin was a divided city. It does stand in stark contrast to the lovely feel of the Brandenburg Gate.

More DDR style than any other building. Full of guards securing the empty streets. Home of the NSA, recording everything, as the Status then and others before. Ugly building, nothing to see here.
I disagree with the other reviews but I think you have to have appreciated the architects views. The position is grand, right next to the Brandenburg Gates. All buildings were destroyed in WW2 and the rebuild of the city is rather bland overall. But if you appreciate the care and thought to not dominate the gates yet replicate with new style what once was there. We took an architect guided tour and it opened our eyes to the beauty of this building. Plus I always feel proud to see our embassy's overseas.
The US Embassy building stands on the left side of the beautiful, iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Blucher Palace used to stand where this ugly building stands now. Surprisingly this embassy building was designed on the the plans that were competition winners. American architects Moore Ruble Yudell of Santa Monica, California designed this austere piece of architecture which lays more stress on security than beauty.
Well, US embassy in Berlin does not visually differ from any other in the world - and most of the people of course understand the massive defensive measures. However, to build up such ugly bunker-like building just beside the historical monument of Brandenburger Tor, was very unlucky decision. As a man who remembers cold war on the eastern side of the Iron curtain, the appearance of this embassy reminded me the noisy sowiet trucks and vainglorious glances of the soldiers. Unfortunately I consider this as a depressing destruction of that memorable place.
