We walked up to Castle Hill a great place to get a really good view of the esplanade and Nice. It was a hot day so we were able to sit in the shade and have our lunch. A couple of places that you can buy your lunch.

You can walk up but there’s a lift! In the old well. And along thexentranc3 to the lift there is a very succinct history of nice which we found fascinating.
There’s a nice cafe at the top with lots of shade and lovely trees.

Castle Hill provides the best views of Nice and an excellent place to get some shade and relax. If you are walking there, take the elevator from the bottom at the end of the Prominade des Anglais - its free and saves your legs.

The panoramic views are breathtaking. Perfect for photography. When we were there an elderly man was playing the accordion which created a magical experience. There are a couple of cafes for refreshments on the way up. There’s also a children’s park. It is a lot of steps if you take the main entrance near the seafront but we cheated by wandering through the Old Town and attacking it from behind, the slopes are easier to bear than the steps, also by going this way you can visit the Jewish Cemetery which has beautiful statues and columns. Worth the walk but on a not so hot day! There is s man-made waterfall on the lower level and it has a small grotto too. There are shady areas in the park below for chilling out.

We visited on a Monday at the end of June. There was no queue at all at the free lift both up and down. It was so convenient if you travel with young kids. There is a big playground next to a cafe which is great for kids. Cafe serves basic paninis and drinks which is sufficient for a basic lunch. Some benches near the playground in the shade underneath trees to watch the view from top and kids at playground. Nice place to spend half day with kids.
