Dinner tonight at 'Entract' was so much less than we expected....yes we had the special plate of the day at a modest price but you would think that if you want to maintain a big culinary name like Coutanceau in the La Rochelle area, then even your simplest and most modest meal should be good and live up to the name. Unfortunately, the lamb with white navy beans was very ordinary and almost tasteless and served room temp. The disappointment was surprising given the recommendations, the reviews and the snobby waiters and as we had been there years ago when it was good, we were hoping our meal would be delicious. It may take many more years for us to return especially as there are many other good restaurants in La Rochelle that deserve attention.

Pleasant lunch that didn’t quite live up to our expectations. I had the mullet filet and my wife had the duck, and we shared the lemon cheesecake for dessert. Good but not great. The restaurant is better I suspect than the tourist restaurants surrounding the harbor, but both our other meals in La Rochelle were better. Friendly attentive staff, modernistic, pleasant atmosphere.

The food was pretty good, but the service was so bad it soured the whole evening. We had not booked, and were offered a table near the kitchen. Wonderful to watch the kitchen brigade at work, really skilled and professional. We had lots of time to watch them. We waited for a menu, we waited for water, we waited for our food, we waited for our wine. One of the servers apologised for the delay. When we called for the bill I noted they had charged us for a glass of wine, not the bottle. I pointed it out, the bill was corrected without comment or thanks. When we left I said to the waiter (in French) that the evening had been a shambles. No comment, no response. On balance, a great disappointment.

Pleasant restaurant, friendly and efficient staff, interesting menu, but the food came nowhere near living up to expectations. It was flavourless and bland and no better than a 14 euro lunchtime workers' menu. Steak - one third fat covered in a thick layer of onions Fish dry. Lack of originality and style throughout the menu. We have no problem with good honest food, but this was not up to the standard and was vastly overpriced for what we had. An unforgettable meal for all the wrong reasons.

Run by the Coutenceau family- a force in La Rochelle cuisine with other, posher restaurants in town. This is a brasserie but the trimmings of fine dining are maintained e.g. waiting staff in black and white, cloth tablecloths and napkins etc. They offer simple food prepared and presented to a high standard. I had tomato stuffed with mackerel pate then liver cooked exactly to my taste and smothered in garlic . My wife had cod with veg accompanied by wine which is pricey unless you select local Charantais which we found more than acceptable. Service tailed off as it got busy. Well behaved dogs are allowed in and water is supplied for them by the resto. Overall simple, well-cooked food at reasonable prices (86 euros for 2 including wine) Reserved inn advance. Would recommend unhesitatingly.
