Great hotel within walking distance of the Port towers and harbour restaurants. Staff all very friendly . We only checked in for boarding facilities as we like to eat with the locals and attempt to practice our French. Some amazing boulangeries/ paterisseries in the shopping lanes.
We flew into Nantes as La Rochelle airport is closed for the winter. Drive to La Rochelle took about 90minutes.
Brilliant traditional market to be experienced if you are a lover of fish.
Most restaurants offer a 2/3 course set menu from 16 euros. Tried the local Pinneau which comes with either Red /White or Rose. Personal preference was the white as the Red seemed too sweet.
Even though the weather was a constant drizzle, we managed to see some lovely sights and architecture as most of the museums were closed for Winter. Therefore was saved from Cognac tasting .
We visited the local island about 30minutes away by car and stopped off at the village of Saint Martin which also has a lovely port and various bar/restaurants.
If we have the chance again we would love to return to La Rochelle area again in warmer climates. More
