“Lovely cottage - too many rules”

We stayed for a week in the smaller gite, which was comfortable and well equipped and while the location was a tad more remote than we had expected, it didn't mar our enjoyment of the area, which is beautiful and very peaceful. However, on arrival what did take us aback was the book of rules and expectations, which is the most comprehensive that we have ever come across in over 20 years of self catering holidays. The owners cite the bad behaviour of a small number of guests as the reason for the pages of "dos and don'ts", and we can understand that some basic rules probably do need spelling out, but on the whole, it felt as if they expected all new arrivals to trash the property, which did not make for a totally relaxing time. What was particularly surprising was being presented with a box of cleaning materials, including mop and bucket, and being expected to virtually spring clean the place before departure. As the deposit is a hefty £150, we felt obliged to leave no trace of ourselves behind. Whilst the owners have a lovely property in a beautiful area, we found their management style didn't make us feel welcome or allow us to enjoy our holiday to the full.

Management Response
24 Aug 2015
In response to your comments concerning our cottage 'rules' and security deposit. These do not differ from those stated in our booking conditions, which you agreed to upon signing our booking form thus completing your reservation. Guests have the choice as to whether they wish 'to leave the cottage as they find it' or indeed if they wish for a clean to be carried out on their behalf. Your comment about not being able to enjoy your stay here to the full, could also probably be due to the fact that you were caught looking in one of our freezers, so say looking for a brush, which to our knowledge are not normally kept in freezers, but coincidentally are stored in your cottage! As to being presented with a box of cleaning products, at No point did we present you with this box, however they are available to guests should they wish to use them. We are glad however that you found the cottage to your liking and enjoyed your visit to this part of the Loire valley.

“Well equipped gite”
Reviewed 21 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

The gite is a converted barn which has been converted to a high standard and is well equipped. Although it is quite isolated in a rural village there is a boulangerie within a 20 minute walk and within car travelling distance is the City of Saumur and the excellent chateau at Villandry. The two bedrooms in the gite have very low wooden beams so care has to be taken particularly after a glass or two of wine. There is an outside heated pool at the gite which is most welcome on hot days. Although there is a shaded area where you can sit on upright garden chairs there aren't any sun umbrellas around the pool, these would be a much welcome addition when in need of shade from the blazing sun whilst relaxing in one of the loungers. This is one of the best gites that we have stayed in in several Summers of touring France.

“Peaceful Setting”
Reviewed 1 September 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We have stayed at Iain and Jo's gites numerous times during the past 15 years and have always had a great time. Jo and Iain are very welcoming and are always available for advice and helpful tips without being too intrusive.
The accommodation is just right for a relaxing stay in this pretty and peaceful area of the Loire. If you are after late night partying you will be disappointed! The pool area is fab and the heating takes the early season chill away very nicely; with plenty of room to sunbathe and shade if you want it, this is a lovely area.
The small patio and garden at the rear of the gite is the perfect place to have a BBQ or a glass of something cool whilst watching the sun set over the orchards. The 10 minute walk to the local boulangerie is a perfect excuse to buy a croissant or two and burn off the extra calories.
We enjoyed our stays so much at La Poulerie that we eventually bought our own place in France and now live here full-time - all thanks to Iain and Jo!

“Total peace and quiet”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Stayed in the larger of the two cottages with my partner in May 2014.
Now depending on what you’re looking for, this may or may not suit. The cottages are about half a mile from what can only be described and a sleepy village. There’s a bar and small shop along with the bakers. Yes it’s a little remote and you’ll need to plan food shopping. But if that’s what you’re looking for then it’s ideal. The English owners who live on the same plot of land are extremely helpful, very pleasant and will give as much help as you need, or equally happy to just leave you to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Our cottage which was the larger of the two was spotlessly clean, very well equipped, and suited us just fine. Would have no problem in recommending it.

“Idyllic, peaceful country retreat”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 for a stay in June 2014

We love this area so much it was our 9th visit to La Poulerie. Our hosts are the most kindly, friendly people you could wish to meet. Nothing is too much trouble. If you need advice on where to go to enjoy a day out in the area or to visit places such as Langeais, Bourgueil, Saumur and Villandry and many more.

The pool which can be used during the day is a bonus in the very hot weather. The gite is
equipped to a very high standard or cleanliness and comfort which has always been exceptionally high. A car is essential to enjoy the surroundings. There are many markets
to visit including some like our boot fairs.
