Visited tonight. Husband has severe, allergic reaction to crustacean, including prawns
Ordered scallops which are not crustacean. The dish, on arrival, included prawns ( crustacean) as well as scallops, although this was not mentioned in the menu description. We explained the allergy, and the waiter returned with scallops only, but we then ascertained these had been prepared in same pan as crustacean dishes. Had my husband eaten the scallops, he would have suffered a medical emergency, possibly death.
We declined to pay for either his or my meal, which I had not eaten since my husband had not been served a dish he could safely eat.
The restaurant demanded payment and an unpleasant exchange took place in front of other restaurant diners. We declined to pay and suggested the police be called. The restaurant manager reluctantly conceded.
The food looked excellent and the restaurant seems to be well regarded, but clients should not be put at risk. Payment for my meal, uneaten as a result of my husbands meal not being suitable, should not have been demanded.
We are a couple, aged 82 and 71 ,very experienced world travelers, and very knowledgeable diners. Never had this experience before, and hope not to have it again
