Place Carnot is the main attraction in Carcassonne. It is a very large pedestrian only square in the middle of the city. The center has a very large fountain as it’s focal point.
It’s the place to gather. It’s the place to leave the guys while the girls slip away to explore boutique shops.
You can have meals in one of the many restaurants available from light fare to a full on dinner. Or coffee and pastries. Wine and cheese. Drinks. You name it, it’s all there.
Saturday’s feature a large (and crowded) Farmers Market. Featuring fresh local produce, cheeses, meats and flowers. Come early though as it’s all over by noon.
The locals take market shopping very seriously and everyone from singles, families and restaurant owners provision themselves for the week.
I bought the biggest sweetest water melon I have ever tasted there. It was worth every second of the agony my arms were feeling by time I got it to the car 30 minutes away!

Sitting in the square is something we enjoy a couple of times a week.

One piece of advice. Public restrooms aren’t that abundant. The restaurants all have restrooms for paying customers, so another reason to sit a spell, and just enjoy

This is the heart of the city and includes so much! The wonderful Neptune waterfall looks proudly down on the World. There are regular markets on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with friendly traders selling fresh and locally made or grown produce. The square is surrounded by lovely bars, cafés and shops. Over the last few weeks many of the buildings have had a 'face-lift' giving a new colour and vibe to this thriving square. The work is still going on but it is so exciting to watch the improvements.

It just seems that this is the place where life happens and during the year events are held in this location including: wine festivals, vintage car exhibitions, Christmas market and skating rink. If nothing else this is a place to go to relax, people watch and enjoy the sun. We now live in Carcassonne and have the privilege of visiting Place Carnot regularly but certainly a must when visiting La Bastide.

Loved the experience of visiting the local market. We enjoyed perusing each of the market stalls. Plenty of fresh produce, a terrific variety - reasonable prices too. Local farmers proving quality produce still available. Great to see homegrown produce and the locals out early on Saturday morning supporting the farmers, cheese mongers and fishermen. All very friendly and helpful - if you try to speak French to the locals they will immediately respond and become even more helpful knowing you are trying hard. Well worth a visit, there's plenty of coffee houses, restaurants and other shops to visit around too !
