“Very good indeed”

My husband & I rented the apartment for a week in June. It is excellent - just like the photographs. Everything was spotless. The bed is very comfy & the bed linens very nice. The settees are comfy, the TV worked well (good to be able to get English speaking channels if you want), the wifi worked well and the dining area was very pleasant. It is in a perfect location, you can walk to anywhere in Carcassonne from the apartment, including up to La Cite. Steve picked us up & took us back to the airport & Sharon showed us round the apartment when we arrived. Communication with them when booking was very good, which is always reasurring when you book something via the internet. They are very nice people and we would not hesitate to recommend booking their apartment.

“A Stylish, perfectly located apartment...”

We spent three nights at Sharon & Steve's perfect apartment in Carcassonne. Steve kindly collected us/dropped us off at the airport- so no car hire was needed. We spent the days wandering around the old town and the shops and restaurants. The Saturday market was lovely and conveniently in the square opposite. The weather was mostly sunny (early 20c's) and breakfast on the roof top terrace was a lovely start to the day. The accommodation has been sympathetically renovated and keeps the style of a typically French apartment - from the high ceilings to the internal (covered) courtyard - all cool and stylishly finished. Sharon keeps the place immaculately clean and everything you would need was provided - which all went towards us having a lovely relaxing stay.
Thank you again Sharon and Steve!

“Superb spacious apartment in a great location”

Well it's all been said already, but we have to agree with all the glowing reviews below. Sharon and Steve are just great, really friendly and helpful, the perfect hosts. The apartment is just as comfortable, stylish, and well-appointed as you'd hope it to be, and far more spacious than expected. Ailsa's thorough review below this one describes it all very well so I won't repeat. Suffice to say we would happily live in it full-time.

Carcassonne itself is a great base for exploring the region being well connected by efficient and reasonably priced trains - we visited Narbonne which is well worth a day out and only half an hour away. The Cité (citadel) was wonderful and it's perfectly easy to see past the inevitable tourist-trap aspects and appreciate it for the amazing place it is. I can appreciate though that on a hot day in crowded high season it might be a bit overwhelming, so I recommend going in quieter months.

Thank you Sharon and Steve for making it such a pleasure to visit.

Liked best: Quality and spaciousness of the apartment. Helpfulness of the owners. Location.
Liked least: Being picky, the over-bath shower is a little cramped, Dim lighting on communal stairs.

“Perfect location especially without transport”

I'd not used Holiday Lettings before so was a bit nervous. I needn't have been. As everyone else has said, the apartment is lovely as are Sharon and Steve. There was speedy and efficient correspondence before we got there, which was very reassuring. Being picked up at the airport, and the wine, milk and homemade chocolate cake that awaited us, was really appreciated. There was a small problem with the key one day, which was sorted as speedily as they could allowing for locksmiths! Being taken back to the airport was brilliant especially as it was market day in the Place and it didn't make it easy for car parking.

The stairs to the roof terrace made me a bit anxious as I have vertigo (fine once I'm off stairs!) but the views are wonderful. We went up one clear night and star-gazed. We also had some stunning views of snow-capped Pyrenees, whilst sunbathing, which felt bizarre.
The bed is really comfy and there's plenty of storage space. Close the shutters to the bedroom at night so that the morning sun, shining through the dining room roof doesn't wake you but open the windows for additional ventilation. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment and there's a very useful collection of food basics e.g. salt, sugar, tea. As for the large windows in the sitting room - wonderful. The market is 3 times a week with the biggie on Saturday. It is to die for and I only wish we'd arrived on Friday rather than Saturday to enable us to take advantage of it for the week. We're in our 60s and had no problem with the stairs up to the apartment but if you are a bit frail it could be a bit difficult.

When you go to La Cite wear very sensible and comfortable shoes; you'll regret it if you don't. The Museum of Torture/Jail is well worth the entrance fee. Hideously engaging. There is light relief to be had in reading the appalling English translation - it was easier to read the French as some of the English was incomprehensible. There are also 2 or 3 really nice clothes shops in amongst the touristy stuff.
If you have the time, take the Eurotrain for an afternoon/morning out. The timetable is not clear but basically it only costs 1euro (it's part of a regional development scheme as far as I can see) to go south to either Limoux or Quillan. We went to Quillan, instead of Limoux, on the advice of a French woman we met on the train. It's a small but pretty town and the scenery between Limoux and Quillan is more mountainous than the flatter land between Carcassonne and Limoux. The Cafe de Gare does a mean baguette.
We drank wine, coffee, pastis and sirop de menthe in bars around the Place. They're all perfectly nice and ideally placed for people watching. We ate twice in L'Als'assiette, which is not far from the apartment. The portions are huge so be very hungry or only order one course, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The owners are really nice. It specialises in Alsacienne food. I've forgotten the name of the other place we had dinner but it's on the square and it's got big glass windows - you can't miss it. Mostly we cooked for ourselves. Monoprix is bigger than Carrefour but we preferred Carrefour.

There are lots of interesting shops, never mind the galleries/museum and you could have a far busier holiday than we did. We went on one of the shorter cruises along the Canal du Midi one day and then walked along it another. However, one of the best things we did was go to Lac du Cavayere. It's the no1 bus from the Dome and the driver will tell you where to get off (end of the line basically) and it is only 2 euros return. I actually managed to swim in the lake, though it was a bit bracing. As the days get warmer it will be idyllic. Take water and food and enjoy walking through the forest and round the lake. There aren't any toilets around the lake if they are vital for you!

The only niggle was the tv/internet reception, which was very intermittent but I assume that's to do with the geographical location. It didn't bother me but it did irritate my partner when he was trying to watch some footie! If you've never been to Carcassonne, this is a really lovely base from which to discover it, especially if you don't have your own transport. I really hope we'll be returning. Well done Sharon and Steve.

Liked best: The sensitive modernisation and the spaciousness of the apartment. The location.
