“Fantastic apartment with artistic history”
Reviewed 1 May 2018 for a stay in April 2018

My husband and I stayed at this apartment for three weeks in April of 2018. We had 2 sets of two guests stay with us for two of the three weeks. There was plenty of room for four people.
Since the apartment is a very short walk to Boulevard Montparnasse you have access to many of the cafés featured in Hemingway’s work (Le Dôme, Le Select, La Closserie des Lilas). Subway stops are nearby, as are the catacombs (pay for the Fat Tire private tour to skip the line). Just a block and a half away is Rue Daguerre. This pedestrian street is filled with restaurants, grocery stores, antique stores, gelato, a post office—everything you’d need. You are also within a half block of a pharmacy and a flower shop.

This is an older apartment filled with families and is very quiet. It is four flights up and there is a tiny, but very quiet elevator. The walls could use some re-plastering and the art deco toilet is a bit glitch (see below), but don’t let this bother you. The apartment is well-kept, clean, and very functional. It has a small washing machine (think either 2 large bath towels or one pair of jeans, t-shirt, and socks fitting at one time) with a rack above the tub to dry clothes on, a well-equipped kitchen with every pot, pan, and utensil you could possibly need, and good beds in both bedrooms. We really liked the open studio design-very roomy and bright. There are plates, and vases, placemats, towels, sheets for the beds, linen cabinet, small refrigerator, stove top (and oven—but we didn’t use the oven), powerful hairdryer, extra blankets, and one medium oscillating fan. The tap water is drinkable and quite good. There is a nice table that can fit 8 people, and a desk in the upstairs bedroom. The apartment door automatically locks, and there is an extremely sturdy deadbolt that goes into the concrete to use at night and when you leave the apartment. The apartment building is also locked and only can be accessed if you know the code. There is a recycling area near the trash bin near entry way. There is no A/C, but with the windows open and sliding white shades pulled to decrease sun the temperature was fine even when it was in the 80s outside. Clothes dried very quickly in the apartment. Just around the corner is a taxi stand area -so easy to get a taxi to the airport when you are ready to leave Paris. Others mentioned issues with the toilet. It’s an antique. The trick is to take the lid off of the top. Flush the toilet—holding the handle until all the water has drained from the tank, then to flip the handle up which snaps the black cap thingy back. Stand there—for 3 minutes and watch the tank fill back up and make sure it isn’t “running,” and voilà—all is good. We did not have one problem the entire 3 weeks except to occasionally forget to make sure it wasn’t running- and we’d quickly jiggle the handle and all was fine. The dated-ness of the apartment is part of its charm. Also, it is nice that you benefit from the community aspect of previous tenants. We enjoyed a bottle of wine left by the previous occupants. And we left non-perishable groceries, and some cleaning supplies that we didn’t get to use. We did have someone come in and clean every week we were there, as per the agreement. This was nice as she washed our table cloth and made the apartment a little brighter.

We had read that the apartment was the former studio of an artist many years ago and figured it may have an artistic vibe. As it turns out the apartment is essentially a memorial to Gino Severini and Cubist movement. The apartment has stayed in his family and many of Severini’s works of art, books, and other memorabilia are displayed in the apartment. It was like staying in a little museum. Severini’s work has been featured at the Guggenheim and MOMA in NYC. When we visited the Picasso museum in Paris we saw that from 1913-1915 Picasso lived at 5 rue Victor Schoelcher. Essentially, Pablo and Gino were neighbors with apartments that both overlooked the Montparnasse Cemetery. It was easy to imagine Picasso and other cubists had visited the studio to see Severini’s work. We had hoped to stay here when we return this summer, but it had already been booked. We will try again next year.

We were 4 persons and had agreat stay in this spacy artist's apartment next to the place where Simone de Beauvoir lived 30 years. The little defaults were largely compensated by the ambiance of the place. Very near to the centre of Paris, the place is very calm. Rue Daguerre wich is at 5 minutes distance by walking is a very charming shopping zone wher we had our baguette each morning and other fine food. The Cemetary of Montparnasse and the Catacombs are nexte to the apartment. Rue Schoelcher Nr. 5, also next to the place, is a beautyful example of Art Nouveau in Paris.

Quaint, enchanting, full of good taste (with some interesting articles of decoration too!), well located, safe, and it provides all that's needed for a good 'base of operations' for anyone visiting Paris. A five minute walk from transporartion hubs (Denfert-Rochereau and Raspail metro stations), and close to nice restaurants (on Rue Daguerre). We enjoyed our stay very much and look forward to a repeat on a future occasion.

Liked best: The practical location close to Metro, buses, taxis, grocery shopping and restaurants.
Liked least: The property managers did not respond to requests for information and orientation and we had to figure things out by ourselves.

A text-message making contact days in advance of our arrival gave us a "feeling" that things would work out right. It did indeed. Nice location and quiet neighbourhood gave us a wonderful time in Paris. Having a base and place to stay and eat in private.
