“Perfect in so many ways.”

We stayed at the Canal Apartment for our two-week honeymoon in Paris, so we were particular in what we wanted and thorough in our research. Renting an apartment in Paris from the west coast of Canada meant taking something of a leap of faith, and we found that there were three criteria we were unwilling to be flexible on: convenience, cost and overall desirability.

The Canal Apartment offers convenience in a number of ways. First, it’s a block away from Jacques-Bonsargent station, which is only one stop from Gare de L’Est and one stop from Republique. Those two stations are hubs from which one can access all of Paris easily. It is, literally, 15 minutes from the apartment to the Palais Royale - Louvre station, which is at the front steps to the museum itself (the Paris metro being the juggernaut of urban convenience that it is, pretty much all of Paris is between 10 and 20 minutes from the apartment). If one prefers (and we often did) one might skip Bonsargent Station and walk a couple of blocks to Gare de L’Est (which has a great little mall built into it, a comfortable place to shop for tourists) or in the other direction to Republique (for some very authentic Parisian shopping).

In addition to its ideal location for getting around the city (and not being stuck in the manic heart of it) is the fact that the apartment is bright, clean and fully stocked. From coffee (and milk and sugar for our coffee) to dishwasher soap and laundry detergent, the apartment is, literally, flip-key.

In terms of cost, there’s not a lot to say. If you are looking at apartments then you probably already know that there is a huge savings to be had in apartment rentals versus hotel rates. We looked into staying at one of the Citadine hotels in Paris because they have in- suite kitchens, but they start at $200 euros a night. For interest’s sake we also had a look at the nearby Timhotel one day as we walked past it (they had rates posted outside) and it looked like a junior suite was nearly double the cost of the apartment and the rooms don’t have kitchens. A quick Google search showed that there really is no comparison in terms of size and amenities. When it comes to cost, the Canal Apartment is an incredible value – not just in comparison to the apartment/hotel option, but also in comparison to the other apartments we looked at.

Finally, there’s overall desirability. We are both professionals, and we appreciate professionalism: from the beginning, we found that booking the Canal Apartment through FlipKey was the most secure and sensible system we had come across. In fact, throughout the booking and our stay, we found Jason to be a consummate professional when dealing with every aspect of the rental. We appreciate that the décor is fun, but we really value that it’s not campy – the apartment has a polished finish to it and is meticulously kept. That is desirable in any vacation rental, and it can be surprisingly elusive. The amenities in the apartment are also very well-kept, including the stove with both an oven and a dishwasher built in. The Wi-Fi is easy to access, and unlike the Wi-Fi in any hotel we have ever stayed in, it is both reliable and fast.

We left Paris feeling as though we had been privy to a very select experience, and I suspect most people who stay at the Canal Apartment leave feeling that way. One example of the select nature of our experience came in the form of an official invite to the preview for the 2013 Paris Art Review at the Grand Palais. Jason and Alain couldn’t go, and Jason thought the opportunity to see the Grand Palais (which is not always open to the public) might be memorable, and it certainly was.

The nature of the location of the apartment is another part of its overall desirability: Paris has a real verve to it, and spending a day immersed in the throngs of tourists and Parisians is exhausting. The neighborhood immediately around the Canal Apartment has everything to offer, from two chain grocery stores to dozens of dining options with high Trip Advisor ratings, but a pace that is several notches down from the mania of locations closer to the city center.

We spent a several weeks researching Paris options through virtually every vacation rental venue that there is before settling on the Canal Apartment for our honeymoon, and in every way it was a leap of faith that provided glowing memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. It seemed to be convenient, priced right, and generally desirable and, on all three accounts, it totally was. It was the perfect center of a perfect honeymoon.

“wonderful apartment”
Reviewed 5 January 2013 for a stay in December 2012

Jason very helpful. Wonderful, tasteful, spotless apartment. Extremely comfortable. Very convenient to Gare de l'est. Fireplace works and Jason was kind enough to pick up some wood and kindling for us. Grocery store and patissieres closeby. Restored our faith in renting apartments in Paris.
