“A 400yr old Romantic Retreat needing Tender Loving Care”

First off, I would like to say my wife and I have just had a fabulous holiday in Dinan. Dinan is one of the most beautiful towns in Brittany, full of history, great restaurants and a very friendly feel; and this property is absolutely ideally placed for a visit. Everything is within a short walking distance. It is also very close to a lovely coastline and we went on stunning walks every day. Pick of the bunch was a lovely circular cliff side walk from St-Briac-Sur-Mer (ask for details at the Tourist Information Centre).
The house has only one bedroom but has plenty of space, spread over three floors. (The central spiral stair case with rope handrail is probably not suitable for children or anyone with mobility problems). The garden area was fine although we spent little time there. There was a good size TV with English terrestial channels. For this and the location we give it 'two points'. Unfortunately the major reservation about the place is the fact that the ground floor kitchen and toilet area seems to have a problem with damp and there is a pervasive musty smell. Because we had great weather we were able to manage this pretty well by keeping doors and all windows open to facilitate ventilation. If the weather had been worse I am not sure the mustiness would have been bearable. The toilet has no windows and is also poorly ventilated. Also the bathroom, which is entered from the living room, (no door, just curtains), has no ventilation. This bathroom area is also storage for the bed linen and towels - consequently they all have a musty smell. Overall, the standards of cleanliness were not great and the property requires a lot of TLC. We were somewhat miffed to have to leave a mandatory 60 Euro cleaning bill when we probably left the place in a cleaner state than how we found it.
We arrived to find a hospitality bottle of wine, croissants and butter, and were left a telephone number of someone to contact if we had a problem. Following that we never saw anyone.
Overall, this property has great potential. It's setting is ideally placed for a lovely holiday in a beautiful town. I appreciate it is pretty cheap. However, I don't think it is a case of 'you get what you pay for'. Most travellers require basic levels of cleanliness and in this case our expectations were not met.

“Quaint old cottage, very close to the medieval centre of Dinan.”

Nice old cottage a short walk from the town centre. Well equipped and homely but could do with a bit of tidy up in the décor in places. Initially my wife was put off by the gloomy alleyway entrance and the feel of damp in the kitchen but after the heating had been on a while, the atmosphere improved. As I said though, it is a very old , solid walled building and as it was October, what could one expect ? The layout of the cottage is a bit unusual but not bad enough to diminish the charm of the place. The bathroom needs some tiling done to improve it and a high attachment point for the shower head and a curtain would not go amiss. The lounge has a lovely character and the bedroom is well presented although I found the sloping walls not something I could tolerate for too long.
Although I do not use the internet much, a provision to do so would have been useful.
All in all a nice place to stay and we enjoyed our week there.

“Good Location but needs TLC- Not suitable for very young children”
Reviewed 17 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We had a wonderful stay in Dinan and the gite was in a good location to explore the local area. The gite itself could possible do with some work on the floors and the staircase which was rickety in places. Also the windows could do with a lick of paint and the gite was not wuite as clean as it should have been considering that a cleaning fee of 50 euros is paid by all who stay here. Our main concern was that (even though we were advised that it was suitable for children) it is not quite toddler friendly as we were unable to attachbaby gates with out adaption with cable ties and then could only get one in the main bedroom. The spiral staircase opens out from the front room and is too wide an opening to attach safety measures so we were constanting watching our 3 year old son in case he fell near the stairs. My advise would be that older children are best suited to this property. On the bright side we were met by basic supplies in the kitchen on arrival of bread, croissants, milk, butter and Jam-also a nice bottle of the local cider! The bed is confortableand the velux windows are lovely. The garden is also a bonus with children with a swing at one end. The shops are very close by too. We enjoyed our stay and would also like to compliment Judy on her helpfulness. The Gite is a lovely place but was not right for usbut would make a lovely place to stay for a couple or families with older children.
