“A Warm Welcome at Gite St Martin”

Gite St Martin turned out to be the perfect destination for our family holiday in France. We spent two memorable weeks with our two kids (7 and 9) in Les Eyzies last July. Chantal welcomed us with a genuine warmth and she was generous and patient with our kids. We sent our children to Chantal for a few French lessons in her study – great refreshers while away from their French immersion school program back in Canada. Chantal also made two fabulous meals of local specialties for us, which were absolutely worth the extra cost!
We felt blessed to be the first family to enjoy Chantal's pool, a wonderful surprise for us since the pool had only just been installed. The weather in July was hot and the pool was so welcome, although we also spent quite a bit of time exploring local rivers, caves and castles. The cottage itself has very thick stone walls and therefore maintains a comfortable temperature day and night. The cottage, though attached to Chantal and John's home, faces its own very private yard and we never felt overlooked. Whenever we ate at the cottage, we enjoyed our meals on the private veranda overlooking the yard.
Les Eyzie is a beautiful village, which houses France’s national Museum of Prehistory. There are also so many great nearby places to visit to explore the local history and prehistory. For outtrips, our favourites included the village of Saint Leon (be sure to stop at Dejeuner Sur L’Herbe for lunch!), Commarque Castle, Castelnaud, La Roque Saint-Christophe, canoeing on Vezere and the many caves of the region. We also liked visiting the snail farm outside Tayac. Some day we would love to make a return visit. Meanwhile, we are recommending Gite St. Martin to all our friends who are interested in visiting this region!

“Fabulous place, fabulous hostess, fabulous holiday!”
Reviewed 27 July 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Whether you choose to stay in the self-contained cottage or take bed--and-breakfast in the main house, you will have a fabulous time staying in Gite St Martin. The cottage is beautifully restored, with beams, wooden floors and a huge fireplace. You will find all mod-cons, with a fully fitted kitchen, lovely dining room, lounge and bedrooms and lovely bathroom. The terrasse opens onto the garden. Just beautiful!
The main house is just as lovely. I recommend you take advantage of Chantal's cuisine, by arranging to eat at least some of your meals with her. She also teaches French, to any level of speaker. What more could you want? She is a most welcoming and gracious hostess.
And if you do want more, this part of France has everything - from ancient cave paintings to walled cities and castles, peaceful countryside and walks by the river.
