“The immpecable standard of our Lodge and helpfulness of the owners made our week really brilliant.”
Reviewed 22 October 2010 for a stay in June 2010

We were a group of 12 Trefoil Girlguiding members visiting Lancashire for our AGM and staying for a week's holiday in Kingfisher Lodge, self catering. The standard of the fittings was so high - absolutely everything you could want was provided, and the setting, with views over to Morecambe Bay, quite stunning. The house was very comfortable with nearly all rooms en suite and was designed by the owners to make it easy to live in. We could walk from the Lodge, the M6 was near enough to make longer journeys simple and there are lots of things to do in the area. The owners themselves could not have been more helpful and the Lodge was spotlessly clean on arrival. Anyone who is posting a negative review is definitely not reporting truthfully as we saw the detailed cleaning and checking undertaken when another cottage was vacated near us. We would recommend this unreservedly and feel that anyone going there will not fail to appreciate the hard work put in to make these cottages so attractive and comfortable. Pam Shaw, Trefoil County Secretary, Norfolk Girlguiding

“Amazing! Could not fault accomodation, facilities or friendliness of owners!”
Reviewed 18 October 2010 for a stay in November 2009

13 of us stayed in the beautiful Woodpecker cottage for a fabulous long w/e. It was very relaxing and Sue and Terry could not do enough for us. They provided details of where to go in the area and we also had a beautician sent to the property for a day of pampering.
I can't wait to go back again!
Thanks again Sue!

“Barnacre cottages”

I stayed at Woodpecker cottage, Barnacre, near Preston and was disappointed. The property has 5 stars but as someone who has stayed in many self-catering properties I feel it was more 3/4 stars.
Some warnings for anyone thinking of booking:
1. It is very noisy. Outside the noise from the M6 is quite bad but inside there are real issues. The hot water system has a pump which is so loud it sounds as if a train is coming through the wall. This is bad enough during the day but if someone runs water through the night it is very alarming.
2. Although advertised as having a garden this was a waste, weed-ridden piece of ground. There is only decking. There is nowhere for children to play. There is a field outside the house but as the area has many deer I would not let children play where there might be ticks.
3. The hot water system is inadequate. If someone is having a shower and another person runs water then the shower drys up -not very satisfactory when you are in the middle of washing your hair!
4. There is an Aga cooker in the open plan living area. As there is no electric cooker, the Aga was still belting out heat in the middle of summer. First thing in the morning before the windows were open it was unbearable.
5. There were insufficient easy chairs for our party.
6. The single bedroom is a converted cupboard. This might be suitable for a small child but hopeless for an adult.
7. There are no locks on any internal doors. Even the communal toilet in the utilty room had no lock!
On a positive note it is a lovely area for a holiday!

Barnacre Cottages is a family run business which started in 2002. We are resident owners and live just yards from the cottages. This has been an accidental lifestyle choice to work from home with our converted farm buildings, to enable us to care for our youngest daughter who has 'special needs' and is currently in a wheelchair. From personal experience we are aware how important a break away from home can be. I prefer to speak to guests by telephone if possible, prior to them making a booking, just to make sure that we are the type of accommodation they require and the location is suitable for what they want to do. We always personally greet guests on their arrival and show them around their cottage. During their stay we visit to check that they are happy and comfortable with their chosen property. At no time do we have guests in residence without a family member being here. The customer care that we take ensures that we have a very high return rate. The comments made in this review just do not ring true. Surely someone having such a bad experience would want to make this known to us during their stay. (We have even had people knocking on our door at 10pm on a saturday evening as they have blocked the sink having been round earlier at 6pm to ask my husband to repair their walking boots!!) At the very least, given the accusation that they feel that the cottage is more 3/4 stars instead of the 5* luxury that they have paid for, a partial or full refund for our misrepresentation. We have heard nothing. We have spoken to all guests who have stayed in this particular cottage and none of them have had the experience that this person describes so colourfully. Practically all guests have said that our cottages have exceeded their expectations and our photos do not do justice to the properties. We are happy with this, it is far better for our guests than being disappointed and misled. Unfortunately, I suspect the review has been written by someone who did want to book the cottage again, but I had to take legal action against them for damage and the condition in which the property was left. They did write and threaten to blacken our reputation if we proceeded. I pay the English Tourism Council hundreds of pounds to inspect my properties annually. Their standards are rightly high to show a quality rating that people can trust. Cleanliness, decorations, furnishings, even pots, pans and crockery (in this case Wedgwood) are all assessed . I cannot advertise with a particular company unless I produce a current valid certificate of my 5* star rating. We are in amazing countryside, the Forest of Bowland. We have 14 acres of fields bordered by woodland and are lucky to be visited by fantastic wildlife. This is emphasised on my website. I also have photos of the childrens playarea showing my daughter playing on the climbing frame. Why would you book a holiday in the countryside if you then decide it is not suitable for your children to play as there may be 'ticks' from the deer! The Forest of Bowland advise me that this area is no better or worse than any where else in the British Countryside. I personally know of no one who has been bitten by a tick! We have had guests from all walks of life and all over the world, travel journalists, tv personalities, professional golfers, footballers and foreign government ministers and archbishops, all of whom have had only compliments. We have won many local and national awards for which our customer care plays a large part. We have fantastic unbiased reviews in newspapers and particularly The Times . This reviewer has been able to say these things and can remain anonamous thanks to the policy of Tripadvisor. We are restricted in how we can reply. We also value our personal privacy and that of our guests. In the words of one of our guests, we would prefer to remain one of Lancashires best kept secrets. Decide for yourself.
