Owner description: Willen Lake is Milton Keynes’ most popular park. Over one million visitors a year take part in watersports activities, go cycling, enjoy the playground, try the high ropes course or simply picnic along Willen’s shores. It’s a great place to entertain all ages of family and friends, whether it’s a visit to the café or restaurant, a stroll, trying a beginners’ course in sailing or hiring a pedalo or bike. The park is open year round and there is no admission fee, other than during special events when some areas may be unavailable to the general public, or a fee may be charged. (Note that car parking charges apply.) Leisure activities at Willen Lake are managed by Whitecap Leisure Ltd, a trading subsidiary of The Parks Trust.

Willen Lake is one of the primary attractions in Milton Keynes. With loads of green spaces MK has to offer, there are plenty of open places to hang around with family and friends. Willen Lake with its two lakes and the Peace Pagoda are brilliant for a day out.

The south lake has a restaurant inside the Premier Travel Inn and a cafe near the bandstand. There is a children’s play area as well as a newly created splash zone.

There are pedalos, kayaks available to rent and there is also a water sports centre for surf boarding. There is a mini train that runs on a tiny track as well as an Aerial Xtreme centre. So basically there is loads to do.

The north lake has a lovely Peace Pagoda and a Buddhist temple. It is certainly a must visit. There is also a Stonehenge and a labyrinth with a BMX track.

Locals flock to this lake on good summer days for picnics. There is plenty of parking available on both sides.

Willen Lake promises an awesome day out for everyone.

The activities planned were so much fun. Big shout to Chloe for organising it all and being accommodating for our requests. Did zorb football first which despite not being our first choice couldn’t have been better. Finished off with some fun on the lake in Katakanus. Everyone got involved and had fun. The instructor we had was really good and we played a variety of activities. Definitely recommend.

Today was our first visit to Willen Lake, just under two miles from Jct 14 of M1. Wide open grassland, huge lake and playground for the grand children. The Splash ‘n Play area looked brand new. A half hour session for just £2 per child was good value. A fun mini train journey as well made our 3 hour stay in the sun, very enjoyable. We ate pizza from a van followed by an excellent ice cream. The kids loved it. The adults enjoyed it as well. Definitely worth a family visit with young children.

We travelled down to Milton Keynes from Yorkshire to visit friends. With the parents away for the day we took their two 9 year old girls to Willen Park to play on the swings and slides. We parked in a disabled bay with a valid blue badge displayed for approx 20 minutes. On returning home to Yorkshire a few days later we received a £100 fixed charge notice as the car was captured going into and out of the entrance by an ANR system. There is no clear indication that this is a private car park operating an ANR camera system and we thought disabled parking was free which is the normal case at local parks..Avoid this place like the plague as numerous other people have had a similar experiences with these ruthless money making people. OK if we made an honest mistake but to charge £100 for 20minutes is nothing more than extortion.

Dear David,

We are sorry to hear about your recent experience at Willen Lake. We wanted to let you know that the car park is managed by an independent car parking management company called Napier Parking Limited and therefore all appeals and correspondence should be sent directly to them. However; we can confirm the car park does have clear signage stating it is private land and the parking rules which are a legal requirement. Unfortunately it seems you may have missed this signage as you entered the car park. Many thanks

We visited for the first time today and thoroughly enjoyed our walk around Willen Lake. It is a very nice time of year to visit with winter colour from willow stems that are planted to striking effect, as well as the early spring bulbs - crocus, later snowdrops and some early daffodils. The Southern Lake has a watersports facility but with wires rather than noisy speed boats going up and down. An entertaining sight from the cafe if you are not sure about participating. The Southern end of the South Lake also has the most striking planting of the coloured stemmed willows and dogwoods.

The Northern lake is rather calmer with a small Japanese garden and striking Peace Pagoda. This looks especially attractive now with banks of yellow crocus planted in front of it. At the Northern end you walk past Willen Village with its 17C Church. The lakes provide good opportunities for bird watching with good views of quite common winter visitors including Gt Crested Grebes, tufted duck, wigeon, gadwall, shovler and potchard. We were also lucky to see a pair of goldeneye ducks close to the shore. There is one bird hide but the walk around the lakes provide many good views.

Catering facilities include a cafe with a fair selection of teas, cakes and snacks and friendly staff. The lunch choices in the cafe are quite limited to some toasted sandwiches. The restaurant however was not a happy experience. If you liked Harvesters in the mid 1990s you will like this... if not don't go there. Joking aside it is a poor show not to have a single healthy option in a park restaurant that in other ways is trying to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Do visit but take a picnic.

Hi,

Thanks for your review, we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to Willen Lake.

Please note that the pub isn't operated by Willen Lake but by Fayre And Square. We would strongly recommend sharing your feedback with them.

We hope to see you at the lake again soon.
