The cemetery itself is - if you walk straight in - not much to look at, to be honest. That is precisely why you should spend 15-30 minutes in the visitor centre beforehand to read all the displays and talk to one of the guides. They are amazing and will launch into lenghty presentations, full of historical facts and the newest research information. All this info makes it definitely worth a visit and will help you understand the structures out in the field much better once you walk through afterwards.

The guide is included in the price of admission, and offered great context on what we were seeing as we walked the grounds.

Brilliant! The staff are very knowledgeable, friendly and keen to help. You can also get a great coffee outside served from a modified horse box!

Some might think, "Who cares, there are some stones out in a field." To me it's overwhelming to be in the midst of ancient, mystical construction. There are large stone circles and tombs are marked as you walk through the fields. Dating tests on charcoal found in some of these structures dates them as far back as 5400 BC. Incredible. Coming forward in time, remains of a baby buried in one of the tombs in 60 AD. Carrowmore is in the middle of a geographic area, which has many ancient monuments and tombs that are found on all the hilltops of the surrounding mountains. The information given when you pay entrance fee is just great. Each stone circle / rock cairn has write ups about its contents and excavation. Two hours or so was sufficient for us, about 20 euros for our family of 6 people.

We were welcomed warmly and given all the information needed to make sense of the sites. The sites are spaced apart and you need to walk across fields to see each burial site, sensible shoes and weather protection may be needed. We found the experience well worth time.
