Owner description: The Merry Ploughboy is the only pub in Ireland owned and managed by musicians, and it is the 'hands on' approach from the owners that makes a visit to the Merry Ploughboy the highlight of many people's trip to Ireland. The two hour Irish music & Irish dancing show (which takes place nightly at the pub) has been awarded "Best Dinner/Entertainment Event in Ireland" and the pub is the current "Music Pub of the Year" in Ireland. Owners and musicians, The Merry Ploughboys, have been performing together for 25 years making their show the longest running show in Ireland hosted continuously by the same performers. The pub is located about 20 minutes south of Dublin City centre with complimentary car parking. It is easily accessed by taxi or if you are staying in the city centre we recommend our shuttle transfer service (just 7.50 euro return fare). The transfer by luxury executive coach offers an elevated view of the scenic Southside of Dublin city. After the show, the coach will drop you back as close as practical to your accommodation. Reservations are essential, however online bookings for the dinner & show (and shuttle transfer if required) can be made in real-time on our own website. We operate a "ticketless" booking system. You will receive a unique booking reference number on your email receipt and our floor manager will have all your details when you arrive at the pub.

This was in a pub outside Dublin. The music was "typically Irish" and so was the dance. Also, almost the entire audience was from outside Ireland, so this is very much marketed to tourists only

If you go to Hawaii, you go to a luau.
If you go to Ireland, you go to the Merry Ploughboy for Irish food, beverages, Irish music and Irish step dancers.

The facility has plenty of parking and there were many motor coach tour groups (in addition to our own 40 people).
The facility has many long tables filled with visitors and is pretty packed, but that is part of the fun.

They offer you your choice of wine or beer when you sit down and then they take your order from the Irish dishes offered. There was water and Irish soda bread on the table with Kerry Irish butter.

The night that were there the menu offerings were a choice of Irish stew, lamb shanks, sea trout or a vegetarian dish. I ordered the lamb shank and my wife had the Guinness Irish stew.
Our food was served quickly and was very good, especially considering the large number of guests in the room. My lamb shank was very tender and was served with two kinds of potatoes and a stew style gravy. My wife’s Irish stew was over mashed potatoes. Both servings were very generous and very well prepared.
As dinner was cleared they brought us a nice desert of a slice of apple pie with rich whipped cream. They offered coffee, hot tea or Irish coffee. I had the Irish coffee and they did not skimp on the Irish.

The show started as dinner ended with a lively four person band playing traditional Irish music on traditional instruments. The songs were familiar and the band was excellent. The band played a set and then the stage was cleared (and raised) for a troupe of Irish step dancers. They provided an excellent performance and even included some audience members.

Then the band returned and finished the evening with more Irish ballads and music.

We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and felt like we were really in Ireland.

HINT: If your table is along the outside walls, try to get a seat on the outside that faces the stage. If your back is to the stage, it is too crowded to turn your chair to watch the show.
