Owner description: This bleak old jail was notorious in the 19th century for its harsh treatment of prisoners.

Touring this facility was quite an eye-opener about the gaol conditions in years gone by. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable & readily answered all questions.

This place books fast! The only spot we got was for the first tour of the day. We arrived thinking it was too early for intense jail stories, but Martha, our guide kept it light. She was very knowledgeable as well. She took the time to accompany us to the museum attached and walk us through it. The museum is also very well laid out with little things that humanize the grim surroundings.

A moving and educational tour. The guide provided details. Reading the original letters that prisoners wrote to their families brought history alive. Looking into the cells and walking in the area where prisoners walked was heart breaking. A new appreciation for my heritage and the hardships was worth the visit.

Excellent history told by a guide who once worked at this facility. Small group tour that was full of interesting history.

If you want to learn Irish history and see what it meant to be a political prisoner this is for you. Do this instead of the Guinness brewery.
