This really is the peoples park. Visited in January and it was really cold - went for a walk in the park not long after first light - the lake was frozen over apart from the bit that the ducks and swans had kept clear by paddling around. Didn't really expect to see anyone but there were groups of joggers, loads of dog walkers, solo walkers, couples, even mothers with babies in prams ! Impressive. There are lovely paved walks right down around the playing fields and down to the lake - complete with a really pretty waterfall. A lovely woodland area goes down to a gated access to the Dodder River walk -the river is pretty wide and there is a stepping stone crossing to the path on the other side. Lots to see and do here and so worth a visit .

Bushy Park is really lively park. People and dogs enjoying the nature. We saw squirrels, herons, swans, ducks and many other birds. Park is really green and the river really nice. There’s quite a few activities to engage with.

Officially opened just this month (9/11/17), the Bushy Park Tennis & Padel Club has already brought some much-needed life and colour to the park’s long-neglected tennis facility.

Boasting 4 padel courts and 9 tennis courts, this is the first public padel facility in the country – open to members and public alike. Despite the best efforts of Tennis Ireland to encourage more people to play the game, the sport retains a stuffy, elite, expensive image, typified by “tennis whites” and club blazers. Opening club courts to the paying public, and allowing players to wear whatever gear they want, are initiatives that struggling clubs across the nation would do well to consider.

The tennis courts are a mixture of artificial grass (€6 per person per hour) and artificial clay (a pricey €9 per person per hour). The padel courts are €6 per person per hour. There are reductions for under 18s, pensioners and the unemployed – but not, surprisingly, for third level students. That doesn’t make economic sense, and needs to be changed.

For those who wish to join the club, family membership is €485 – which, again, in a public park, is pricey enough. But that’s still an improvement on some other clubs in the area – which similarly operate on Dublin City Council parkland, but make it very difficult for the public to access facilities.

An individual adult will pay €285 a year – and, again, there’s no reduction for college students. On the plus side, however, annual membership starts the day you join – and not May to May, as in the case with so many local clubs.

There’s also a coffee machine, a shop and a (lovely touch) viewing area. A coffee shop is planned for the near future.

On the cold November day we visited, the padel courts were bustling with activity, with overseas players – especially Spaniards - showing the locals how it’s done. The tennis courts, by comparison, were empty – and the club still has some work to do to attract new and enthusiastic players.

To that end, the Bushy Park Tennis Academy is offering an Open Day for tennis and fun on Saturday, November 18 next between 10 am and 1:30pm. The Open Day will cater for adults and children alike and will offer a serve speed machine challenge.

Nice location to go for a walk, play some games, or visit the Saturday market and try different kinds of food!
