Husband and I visited on Easter Saturday and just walked in and were able to get a table right away he had to vacate within an hour and a half, which is fine.

Given menu’s and waitress come back quite quickly for our order, no chat, no nothing...purely business.

Hubby had Cullen skink and I had chicken skewers to start, they were both nice. Chicken skewers lacked any taste and has it not been for the dressing would have been dry.

We then had our mains quite quick. He has mussels and clams and I had a sirloin steak. His portion was overflowing and he really enjoyed them however the steak was just blah...it said on the menu seasoned to perfection. There was no seasoning on this and to be honest it was just a piece is steak you could buy in any supermarket.

Waitress then decided to start her chat as we didn’t want desserts...felt it was a quick let’s see if we can work on a tip!!!

Probably wouldn’t come back if we were in town, just overpriced food that wasn’t anything special.

Food was excellent. We ordered the fresh oyster starters - it was amazingly fresh. And also ordered the seafood-mix starters. For mains, we had lamb champ and sirloin steak - both were nicely done. There was quite some waiting time for our food.

We loved Riva and enjoyed many family meals there in over twenty years. So we were excited to visit its' replacement, "Prime Steak and Seafood" with friends on Friday night. First impressions were of the seating refurbishment and if feels as though more covers have been created. We were seated beside a table of 12 who must have arrived just before us and they were awaiting number 13 to join them. We were in for 5 disappointments:

1. Firstly, we had been expecting "surf and turf" to feature heavily in "Prime Steak and Seafood". In the event, the menu is wide ranging and unless you want to share mega expensive Chateaubriand, T Bone or Sirloin Steaks, there is only one choice of steak - a 200g (7oz) Sirloin at £18

2. Each accompaniment is £4. So fries, onion rings and mushrooms will take your Sirloin Steak plateful to £30

3. The four of us each chose the 200g Sirloin and I added King Prawns to mine for an extra, but unadvertised, £1.50 which was good value. Both couples opted to share the accompaniments (per "2" above) between two. But rather than fries, we asked for the Beef Dripping Chips, offered with the Monkfish Tails main course. This took just over an hour to bring to the table

4. Each couple had 6 chips to share, for £4 per serving

5. The chips had been barely cooked, and even then it was in oil, rather than the beef dripping

Positively, the Waiting Staff were excellent - welcoming on arrival, helpful when ordering, proactive in apologising for the wait, and understanding about why we were so disappointed; our complaint was given a very fair hearing and the food did not feature on our final bill; apart from the chips, the food was well cooked

My Conclusions

a) "Prime Steak and Seafood" is an exaggerated misnomer for the restaurant

b) We should have looked at the menu online before booking - it's there for all to see

c) £4 for 6 chips - even if they had been cooked well in beef dripping - is scandalous

d) £30 for 200g/7oz Sirloin Steak, Chips, Onion Rings and Mushrooms is too expensive

e) The individual steak dishes in a restaurant purporting to be "the only restaurant in Inverness to specialise in Quality, locally procured steaks & seafood", should include Rump Steak, Fillet Steak and Rib Eye

f) It would be good to see Roasted Vine Tomatoes as an accompaniment

g) Large tables should not be accepted if the remaining customers have to wait for over an hour to be served

h) The staff are excellent and deserve a more competitively priced menu, starring steak and seafood, to support

Hi Alistair.

Firstly can I thank you for taking the time to review us as we greatly appreciate feed back.

I would like to address a few of the issues you have raised above.
All our produce, where possible is locally and responsibly sourced. Due to seasonality at the time of your visit the amount of fresh local seafood was limited. We have made the choice in this case to reduce the amount of fish items available on the menu. Opting for quality over quantity.

The hand cut chips I can 100% guarantee are cooked in beef dripping. We have a dedicated fryer to ensure this is the case.
They are not normally offered as a side, for the very reasons you have highlighted above. The portion size I agree could seem disappointing. I will feed this back to the team and arrange an alternative for future. Thank you.

In terms of your wait time, I have spoken to the team and we have identified some flaws in our seating patterns that have now been rectified. Sadly an over sight on our behalf not allowing extra space between tables to adapt to our new style of service.

Our steak section of the menu will grow. We are still in a “bedding in” period as staff get use to the brand new kitchen and service.
Apologies that the selection did not meet your satisfaction during your visit.

I would once again like to thank you for taking the time to feed back to us. This knowledge is invaluable to us growing and developing.

Please feel free to contact me on
Ken@cruholdings.com if you would like to discuss anything further.

Many thanks
Ken Loades

First visit and was ok but not great, service was fab so no complaints there at all. Food was a bit disappointing, not wanting to pay £18 for a mushroom, I ordered a few side dishes, fries were good but the mac & cheese was swimming in oil, too greasy to eat, a few friends had steak and the variety in sizes was shocking, one was particularly small for the price. Overall like the place and staff but food needs worked on.
