“MIXED FEELINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

It all started very well, booking was easy, instructions etc all very good, got to the lodge and it was beautiful, great views, all rooms very nicely done, this is a great place for getting around the highlands, and the drive to get there is brilliant, nice little welcome pack etc etc, all very good, not really much to do at John O Groats but easy to get to dunnett beach etc.

Nice welcome letter from the chairman explaining that this was the start of a great relationship.....blah blah blah. I think it was this that left a bad taste in my mouth.

My wife was taken ill with pneumonia and kept in Wick hospital during our stay, we asked if they could do anything to help with extending my stay for a day or two as we didn't know when she would get out and the rest of the family had to go home without us,
I wasn't expecting something for nothing but as the place was probably only a quarter booked ( if that ) they generously offered me £45 discount but I would have to book for at least two days and that was to stay in a small studio, generous as I had just paid top dollar for a sea view lodge?????
We checked out the following day, saw the site manager in the coffee shop, he said good morning, but didn't even bother to ask how my wife was, maybe they get lot's of guests nearly dying during their stay and he thought nothing of it as it is a common occurrence!!!!!!

Start of a great relationship......Really.

Winge over........

The lodge and the site and the views are brilliant, I'm not convinced that the company delivers at it thinks it does.

I would recommend the lodge, not so convinced with Natural Retreats

“Fantastic Location and Accommodation”

Easily accessed, roomy and comfortable accommodation with great views over the Orkney Islands. Close to sea-bird nesting sites for viewing and some great walks and cliff-top views. The lodges are a few hundred metres walk to the passenger ferry to the Orkneys and a few kilometres from local attractions such as the Castle of Mey.

“A Fantastic Holiday - A Superb Place to Stay”

It is very hard to fault the Lodges at Natural Retreats in John O'Groats.

Ours was a Sea View Lodge and we looked out to the Isle of Stroma and the Orkneys. Majestic, even in the rain. It is a magical place. Desolate, a little stormy and quite beautiful. The lodge was a great place to be. Well designed and laid out. Appointed with everything you would need (down to a washing machine and a dishwasher). Wonderfully warm, with the option of lighting the log burner. Our children were perfectly happy playing on the floor in their pyjamas or feeding the plentiful and varied birds that frequent the isthmus.

The Lodge was spotless on arrival and easy to keep in good order. Natural Retreats provide eggs, milk, bread, tea and coffee...even a bottle of wine. It really is a fantastic service. There is even an espresso machine, powerful consistent WiFi and Apple TV in the Lodge.

We couldn't ask for anything more. And when we did have a problem we called their concierge line and David (I think that was his name) was there 5 minutes later to sort it out.

What do you have to be aware of? The choice of place to dine locally is limited...the larger supermarkets are in Wick and Thurso but it would be possible to stop on your way and plan for a great self catered week.

This is a special place to stay in a special place. Try it.

“Get away from it all”
Reviewed 30 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We have previously travelled to the South West for our holidays but having already done that at Easter we looked for something a little different. After checking out various options on the web we came across Natural retreats and their lodges at John o Groats.

After a monster road trip we arrived bang on our 4pm check in time, although earlier times can be arranged and I had requested a 3pm arrival which was no problem and our lodge
was heated, ready and waiting along with a welcome hamper of local goodies all of which were delicious.

We hired 4 cycles for the week and Scott in the 'Outfitters' was really friendly and helpful in getting us in the saddle!! and suggesting local routes.

Nothing much happens at John o Groats, thats why we went and thats why you should go.Great service from Retreat Manager David and his team of friendly attentive staff, great accomodation and rugged unspoilt landscape with none of the trappings of tacky tourism that spoils so many places.

All in all, well worth the journey, by the way what a journey, stunning drive from Perth up to JOG.Can't wait to return

“WOW!”
Reviewed 21 March 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Love it. What a fantastic place! Clean (spotless), comfortable, beds are really comfy and the welcome pack was so appreciated. There's a Starbucks 2 minutes away (really). A local shop and glorious views. You feel like you are cut off from everything and it is just so relaxing. You have Internet access but really who needs it? Layout is excellent with plenty of space for 6 adults if needed.
